ARIZONA RISING

Hot streak vaults surprising no name Diamondbacks into thick of things

By Scott Jacobs

Don’t look now, but there’s a team with a bunch of young players you’ve probably never even heard of, knocking on the door of the NL West lead. With no prominent bat, and no huge name player, and a team average age of under 27, few expected the Diamondbacks to be in this position. But after a horrible stretch which saw them fall to just 2 games over .500 and seemingly out of the race, Arizona has rebounded back, stringing together eight consecutive wins, to get back to 10 games above .500 and more importantly, to hold the wild card lead over 100 games into the season, as well as be right on the heels of those expensive L.A. Dodgers.
Here’s the thing about the Diamondbacks: they’re so young, and so talented that it isn’t unreasonable to see them in this position. The crazy part is that they haven’t all had breakt houghs this year, in terms of career years, with the exception of Eric Byrnes, but their anemic offense, which came through amicably in their recent four game sweep of the Marlins, has somehow not been enough to deter the brilliant starting pitching and relief work they’ve been getting.

A lot of people at the begining of the year labeled Arizona a potential surprise team, but I don’t think alot of people believed they could do it they way they have. With so many top notch rookies and second year players, Arizona is a beacon for young and exciting talent. But its difficult to rely on so many young players, players such as Chris Young who leads off and leads the team in home runs as a rookie. Players such as Chris Snyder, Connor Jackson, and Quentin Young who has yet to find his nitch are big players for this team. It will be interesting to see just how they fare down the stretch, but as long as their pitching stays strong (Webb, Hernandez, Davis, Velvarde, etc.) they have a serious chance at winning the wild card and maybe even the division. And as recent history has proven, if you can make it to the show, its anybody’s game.

No one’s handing the Diamondbacks a playoff berth just yet, but it should make for a great finish down the stretch. Arizona’s baby backs, in their seventeen zillion different new uniforms (Just kidding, they have four, enough to wear a different one in a four game series) may be redressing the playoff scene, and if they do it, it will be without a big name anchoring down the lineup. If ever you wanted to root for the little guy, here’s your chance. Arizona should be a year away, they know it, but they’re going to make this a race, and that league, that very mediocre and less then impressive NL better be ready.
