FORGETTING SOMETHING PETA?

PETA should get on Georgia; Does name encourage dogfighting?

By Mitch Blatt

If PETA really wants to make some changes regarding dogfighting, they should remember their failed attempt two years ago to get the University of South Carolina to change their name from the Gamecocks. Apparently, naming a team the Gamecocks encourages cockfighting in the same way that naming a team the Devils encourages santanism. While it seems inconcievable that someone who loves animals would suddenly change their opinion and decide to have a cockfight just because their favorate team supports it, it is perfectly logical that someone would do that when the issue is dogfighting. See, the University of Georgia, with their vicious Bulldog as a mascot, has been subtly promoting dogfighting for years. And if PETA really likes dogs, they should stop it.

In 2005, when the NCAA was banning indian team names, I decided to get active. If indians were getting protected from being painted as savages with their team names, why not animals? When we name a team the Lions then go out there and tackle, hit, clip, and maim the other team, we are unfairly making all Lions look savage, making them look like they would actually go out there and attack someone. I thought that was terrible. Mostly, I just thought it would be funny to see PETA’s responce. And it was:

“We don’t believe animal team names are offensive because they show the
animals are majestic and noble. Nicknames like the Gamecocks that
encourage animal fighting are not alright, but nicknames like the Tigers
or whatever are fine in our book.

Unfortunatly, I think he caught on when I emailed him about animal sexuality:

“I feel that the state government is denying my and the animals that
live with me the right to fulfill our pleasures the way we must. I
happen to be able to comunicate with the dog, and I know that he wants
to perform sexual acts with me. Sometimes, he even appears at my bed
and wags his tail and barks in the way that he does when he is turned
on. Unfortunatley, the state of Tennessee has a law against such
acts…”

And then the time I compared PETA to the KKK:

“Quite frankly, I am outraged with your group’s recent racist ads
comparing animals to African-Americans. Animals by no means have the
same rights as blacks. You guys should change your name from PETA to
KKK.”

(They said it wasn’t right to have animals locked up then showed pictures of Africans locked up on slave ships.)

So, he hasn’t responded to my latest emails about the Bulldogs name. But, if you feel as strongly about it as I do (I mean as strongly about annoying PETA, that is.) then email him at ChrisG@peta.org and express your displeasure.
