BARRY BONDS COMES TO FLORIDA
I was fascinated by the crowd’s reaction to Bonds. I went to the game wanting Bonds to hit a home run. Not because I liked the guy, but because I wanted to see him do it. Just one of those, I’m here, hit the ball over the fence type of thing.
Anyhow, Bonds stepped up to the plate to a mixture of boos and cheers, and of course a few asterisk signs. There were people proudly standing up in #25 Bonds jerseys, and almost everybody stood up when he came to the plate. I stood, didn’t clap, didn’t boo, just watched.
His first two at bats he struck out, but on his third at bat, he hit his 760th home run, and guess what planet Earth? No one booed. No body. The place was electric. Cameras were going off like it was Game one of the World Series, and everyone was on their feet screaming and hollering. I mean he crushed the ball, absolutley beat the living daylights out of it. And if I saw correctly, the fan who caught what will for now stand as the new record, threw the ball onto the field! Could you imagine?
Whether you like the guy or not, you don’t throw the ball onto the field. Just imagine if Bonds got hurt tomorrow on a fluke accident and had to retire. That ball would be worth a fortune!
I guess the point I’m trying to make here though is that we are all hypocrites. We want Bonds to fail, but as soon as he hits a home run, we can’t help but get sucked in, and relish it. There is no problem with being hypocrites, but the sooner we admit it, the faster we can move on to Arizona leading the National League, and Seattle fighting for a wild card as well as other juicy stories as well.
