HEY STOOPID!
FIRE MIKE BROWN!
What happens when you get a bunch of idiots who don’t know sports, give them a pencil and paper, and let them send their questions in to the Plain Dealer? Hilarity ensues!
Sample questions:
“Will the Browns make the playoffs if we score just 24 points a game?”
“Why don’t we fire Mike Brown?”
“Don’t the Browns need a veteran quarterback?”
And, from Charles Oakley, “Why won’t the Cavs sign me?”
Basketball
Q: “John Kuester [whom the Cavs recently hired as an assistant coach] is a graduate of North Carolina… When we get rid of coach Mike Brown (March 2008?), Ferry will already have his replacement! This is my prophecy! Brown will flop next year and very quickly! Ferry has picked out a winner!”-N.B. Hammond, South Carolina
A: Brown is a terrible coach. Really. He got the Cavs to the Finals in only his second year, but what else has he done? (He got them to the second round the year before.) So, I guess, in Cleveland, where the expectations are so high because we are so used to winning, making the playoffs twice in two seasons isn’t good enough. Brown isn’t the best offensive coach, as evidenced by the Cavs ranking 19th in scoring, but he had the Cavs ranking 5th in defense. Once the Cavs sign an adequate point guard, their offense will improve. It may just be one of Brown’s flaws. He’s still a young coach, too. I seem to remember another young coach that Cleveland fans hated. I think it was Bill something. Bill Belichick. I just Googled him, and it says he won three Super Bowls. Good thing we got rid of him before the team moved to Baltimore.
Football
Q: “We all know that GM Phil Savage does not want a veteran QB. Is this an ego thing or an, ‘I don’t want to relive Trent Dilfer’ thing. I love what he’s done, but I think he’s wrong on this.”-Matt Jones, Middleburg Hts.
A: …And that’s why you’re not a GM. (Stick with WR, Matt Jones.) Your reference to Dilfer was right on the money. It is a perfect example of why veteran QBs are overrated. Maybe if there was a good veteran available at a cheap price, it would be something to think about, but we have a rookie who learned from Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame who we want to give as much experience as necessary. (He’ll be starting week 5 when Tucker gets back from suspension.) A lot of good QBs did not have “veteran mentors” when they were learning.
Q: “…I feel that we are capable of surprising the whole league, barring any major injuires to key players–with a good possibility of making the playoffs if the offense can average 24 points a game, thereby giving the defense the necessary rest required to close out games.”-James, Cleveland
A: You really know football James! The Browns scoring 24 points a game would get us into the playoffs? And of course! If only the coaching staff would have thought of that! Scoring 24 points a game would have ranked us 7th in scoring last season! Unfortunately, we ranked 30th. Our offense didn’t improve a whole lot, so I’m not to confident we can get from 14 points a game to 24.
One More From Charles Oakley…
Oakley was referenced in my last column by a women who was wondering why we didn’t sign him. (I think it had something to do with the fact that he has been retired for 4 years, and only average 1 ppg in 7 games in 2003-04.) Oakley himself is now saying he wants to play for the Cavs and thinks he can win us a title.
Q: “Why don’t the Cavs sign me? I’d make the Cavs better, and I told them that a long time ago. My presence and teaching would make a difference in that team. When I come back, I’m going to bring an attitude. I’m not coming back just to be on the team. I’m going all out.”-Charles, Chicago
A: As much as it may hurt you to hear this, Charles, you suck. And you have sucked for some years. Your career scoring average of 9.3 points per game will not boost our offense. You might help some on defense and rebounding, but the Cavs already rank 7th in defense and 2nd in rebounding. We need offense to win a title.
