Bring on October: NL Playoffs

Scott Jacobs

Playoffs shaping up to be the best in years!

You excited? Because I sure as hell am. I am so amped for these playoffs it would be doing a disservice not to throw out some random predictions. Afterall, if we’ve learned anything at all from this season, it’s to love thy underdog, relish thy comeback, and expect the unexpected. Let’s do this thing!

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
What we like: Youthful and energetic group who play with the passion of little leaguers. Top notch closer in Jose Valverde and probably the best pitcher in the N.L. in Brandon Webb.

What scares us: They’re so young, and so untested that we’re a little unsure what to make of them. No .300 hitter. One 30+ home run guy, and a bunch of guys who are good but not great.

The Verdict: They won the NL’s best division why can’t they beat the Cubs?

CHICAGO CUBS
What we like: Money well spent and a commitment to winning. Big name players who have played well in big games. Solid rotation and powerful offense.

What scares us: Hello people! They’re still the Cubs! The team that hasn’t won a World Series in 99 years. Tack one more year on there to make it pretty.

The Verdict: Inconsistent play all year will doom Cubs to another disappointing October.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
What we like: Awesome finish to season. Jimmy Rollins is sensational, and that batting order is scary good. Homefield advantage and a raucous Philly festive atmosphere.

What scares us: Their starting pitching. Is it good enough to win big games in October when their offense has an off day? That’s the big question looming for this team.

The Verdict: Philly will be going wild, but watch out for Colorado

COLORADO ROCKIES
What we like: 14-1 to end the season? Eh, not too shabby. That comeback against the Pads. That was the stuff of ESPN Classic. Todd Helton going to the playoffs, Matt Holiday’s bat, and the young exuberance surrounding a talented team.

What scares us: Roller coaster ride takes them to Philly, but how long can they keep this up? Aren’t they doomed to mediocrity eventually? Or will they continue to play red hot?

The Verdict: How the West was won, just may determine how the National League was won too.
