Ricky’s Return?
Trying to Play NFL Ball After Losing the CFL Rushing Title by 1083 Yards
Ricky Williams has applied to be reinstated to the National Football League. All marijuana jokes aside, the funniest thing about this is that his agent is talking up how durable Ricky is. “He hasn’t taken the wear and tear on his body in the last couple years. He’s a physical specimen and he’s got the potential to be among the league leaders in rushing,” Agent Leigh Steinberg said. Not to cast doubt upon your knowledge of the man–I mean you are his agent–but don’t you remember how he missed four CFL games last year due to a fractured forearm?
And he did place 8th in total rushing yards, but there are 8 teams in the CFL. He was 1083 yards behind the leader.
His stat line that year, 2006 being the only year he played, was 526 yards on 109 carries, an average of 4.8 per carry. That is formidable in the NFL, but the CFL leaders were all above 5 yards per carry, many above 6.
The one thing he did excell at was fumbling. He had 1 fumbles for 2 touchdown. I’m going to be fair. That’s not bad. The CFL is like a league of Tiki Barbers. There were three players among the top ten in yardage who had more fumbles than touchdowns.
Here’s the CFL’s top 10 rushing list from 2006:
# Name Yards-Avg
1 ROBERTS, C WPG 1609-5.3
21 REYNOLDS, J CGY 1541-5.9
47 EDWARDS, R MTL 1137-4.8
32 DAVIS, T EDM 1060-5.6
28 KEITH, K SSK 1037-6.2
33 SMITH, J BC 887-5.3
4 JOSEPH, K SSK 592-6.5
27 WILLIAMS, R TOR 526-4.8
1 BURRIS, H CGY 480-6.9
15 RAY, R EDM 469-5.1
I think the summary is that, as bad as the 0-4 Dolphins are, Ricky Williams won’t help them. It’s not like offense is their weak point, anyway. The Dolphins rank 17th in total yards and 21st in rushing. They might rank higher, but Ronnie Brown is only taking 15 carries a game because the Dolphins are always behind. He has produced 78 yards per game (5.2 per carry) with limited touches.
If the Dolphins could just get Ricky Williams running for the other team, maybe he would help. The Dolphins rushing defense is last place in the league now, so having their opposing running back coughing and hacking all game would help. Overall, the Dolphins are 29th in scoring allowed. The Dolphins’ opponents have converted 51.8% of their third downs.
