South Florida Playing in the BCS Championship Game?

Nothing wrong with South Florida Going for the Title if Playoffs Decided That, Not a Computer
The first BCS Standings were released yesterday and South Florida was #2. (Complete BCS Standings) South Florida has surprised the nation, going 6-0 so far, including wins over West Virginia and Auburn, but I don’t want to see them take an outright bid to the title game based on that alone.
South Florida has been winning games handily, by an average of 19.5 points a game. That probably figures heavily into the fact that they are #1 in five of the six computer rankings used by the BCS. Those BCS rankings don’t take strength of schedule heavily enough, though.
Against the two ranked teams that South Florida played, Auburn and West Virginia, they won by an average of 5.5 points. The rest of the schedule consisted of Elon, North Carolina, Florida Atlantic, and Central Florida.
This illustrates a problem with BCS Football. Every team should deserve a chance, but why should big conference teams that face tough opponents every week be kept out of the championship in favor of a small college? If that small college team beat them in the playoffs, there would be an easy answer. Of course, there can be an argument made either way, for or against the BCS. I’m not sure what side I agree with, but I do know that I’m not comfortable with South Florida playing for a title. Hopefully, the Bulls lose to Cincinnatti (#23), the only ranked team left on their schedule, and the situation will work itself out cleanly.
