2007: Year of America’s Team
We have arrived at the end of the year, and boy what a year it was. We went through six America’s Teams, and finally ended up back on America’s Real Team. So who is America’s Real Team?
Virginia Tech
San Diego Chargers
Alabama Crimson Tide
Washington Redskins
Georgia Bulldogs
Dallas Cowboys
So how’d we get here? I’m sure everyone remembers how Virginia Tech won our hearts, but if you haven’t been paying attention to Juiced Sports Blog, you might not know about the other teams to suffer through tragedy.
The San Diego Chargers were the first to knock Virginia Tech off their pedestal when fires came through and Roger Goodell didn’t provide enough aid. There was even talk they might have to play their home game in Arizona.
But they didn’t hold our sympathy for long. Alabama’s Nick Saban shocked us by announcing that 9/11 AND Pearl Harbor had struck his team on the same day! Most shocking was the fact that the Japanese terrorists responsible for this autrocity had come in undetected, and the damage they caused has still not been seen by anyone outside of Alabama’s coaching office.
Now one that actually does require some sympathy. Sean Taylor died. Washington’s defense was reduced to 10 players for the first play of the next game.
Shortly after Taylor’s passing, Georgia got snubbed from the BCS title game. LSU made it instead, despite that fact that they lost twice (both in triple overtime), compared to Georgia’s two regulation losses, and Georgia also finished second in their division, versus LSU winning the SEC. A real shame.
But, the America’s Team label eventually found itself in the hands of the rightful owner. From the long ago days when Dallas won some Super Bowl till today, the Cowboys have been America’s Real Team. It happened when Jessica Simpson attended the Cowboys-Eagles game and distracted the team into losing. Forget the fact that they lost. Forget that T.O. finally made comments about Romo. Just being associated with Jessica Simpson is reason enough to mourn for them.
