One Season the BCS Actually Did Work Well
I’ve heard a lot of people hating on the BCS in the past few years for being unfair or taking away the excitement of a playoff. Well this season, people shouldn’t be complaining (but they are), because this was the most exciting season of BCS football ever (in it’s 10 year history), and no team can complain about being cheated (shut up, Hawaii). The critics are saying, “This season sucked! There were no good teams! Everyone lost!” Well aside from the fact that there are still a lot of one-loss teams… What made this season great was that there were so many upsets. Most years, the season starts with USC predicted to beat Ohio State for the national championship. USC and OSU remain #1 and 2 all season, then USC wins the championship. Whopie. It was decided at the start. No changes. A few exciting games along the way, but everyone knew it would happen. This season you’ve got exciting games and upsets every week. Top ranked teams are falling like trees in the rainforest. Down to the finally games, there were two that mattered last night. And we might actually have the two best teams in the championship, Ohio State and LSU. I didn’t want to see a Mizzou team whose only wins over ranked teams were against Texas Tech (#24), Nebraska (#25), and Kansas. Kansas was the only good one there, and they hadn’t played anyone either. (I mean, when you have to play a team that hadn’t beat anyone just to say you’ve played someone…) West Virginia probably would have been a little more exciting with their big play offense, but they still haven’t faced much of a schedule. Ranked teams: #18 South Florida, #20 Connecticut, #22 Cincinnati, and #25 Rutgers. LSU won the SEC and only suffered two losses, both deep into overtimes. Ohio State gets trashed for playing in a weak Big 10, but how weak was it really? Michigan lost the first two, an embarrassment to App State, then a loss to a legitimate team, Oregon, before lossing to Ohio State in the final game. For their three losses (two to top notch teams), they ranked 21st. A little bias there, but then again, I hate Michigan, too. Well, I guess Ohio State will have to prove themselves in the BCS championship. No big deal. If the Bucks beat LSU or Georgia, they’ve proven themselves. If they beat Virginia Tech (who isn’t America’s Team, now the Redskins are in the wake of Sean Taylor), there might still be a little bit of doubt. Oh yeah, then there’s Hawaii, the lone undefeated team. They’re making a BCS bowl, so what do they have to complain about? If they faced anyone besides #19 Boise State, they might have had a shot. They just ran up points on lousy teams using a pass-happy system that set records to Timmy Chang as well as Colt Brennan. Hawaii’s schedule makers thought that playing another team that thinks they were cheated last year, as the only ranked team they face, a team that themselves only faced one ranked team, would be enough to get them to the championship… if you get what I’m saying. If you don’t get what I’m saying, I’ll put it in simple terms: Hawaii and Boise State both suck. Just remember, I was the one who predicted OSU would win the championship.
