The National Nightmare is Over

Scott Jacobs

1-13 Miami the greatest 1-13 team in the league!

Did you see them running around? Horsing around after the game like they had just won more then a game? Like they had won a division? No, being from South Florida and living here my whole life I’ve seen the Dolphins win divisions. It didn’t look like this. I’ve seen them win playoff games, and it didn’t appear this emotional. I’ve watched Jay Fiedler dash into the endzone a week after September 11th to sew up an incredible win, and even after getting the cover of Sports Illustrated that week, was the win this sweet.

Miami’s improbably, unlikely, edge of your seat, come from behind, what were they thinking and how could they do that, and how could that possibly happen win, was just in all actuality one win. Miami is still 1-13, by far and away the worst team decimated injuries and questionable coaching hires money can buy.

Their owner, Mr. Wayne Huizenga may be looking to sell the team. Their stadium was more then half empty in pristine weather conditions against a n opponent that was formidable just a year ago. But none of that matters. Miami 16 Infamy 0. It’s a sweet, delicious win, filled with comebacks, Heisman winning quarterbacks playing clutch, lemons being worth the squeeze, and a WR no one’s ever heard of catching the pass to win the game, after one of the league’s best Matt Stover shanked a 44 yarder that seemed destined to doom the Fins to another week of misery.

Next week the Patriots. And there no longer is that alluring 0-14 Fins versus 14-0 Pats square off. But there is a trickle of hope. A reason to be optimistic and okay with being a Miami fan. They’re off the schny. They can fade into obscurity like many 1 win teams do.

But this win was so much more. The disgrace of imperfection, the horror of becoming the only team to win and lose all their games, while watching the Pats win all of theirs is out the window. And here’s something to add to the fun: 14-0 New England. While no one sober will pick Miami to spring the upset of the millennium and arguably the greatest upset ever, at least Miami can walk into Gillette Stadium with a win under their belt. They’ve got a chance, however minuscule it may be, to knock off the giant. In two weeks time, they can avoid infamy, and knock off immortality. They’ve done one.

Can they do the other?
