Cowboys really, really think a lot of that Garrett guy

Now the highest paid assistant in the NFL, Garrett is staying in Big D… for now

What’s the going rate for young talented coaches with great potential? That question gets tossed around a lot, but never has had as much credence as today, when the Dallas Cowboys handed offensive coordinator (of one year!) Jason Garrett a 3 million dollar a year deal, making him the highest paid assistant in the NFL.

Sought after by teams like Atlanta and Baltimore, Garrett instead found out that you can have your cake and indeed eat it too. Who needs a rebuilding job with the Ravens, or a Grant a Wish (make that a lot of wishes) with the Falcons, when you can make just about as much as the head coach above you, and still coach a team loaded with offensive firepower.

But 3 million? Isn’t that a little absurd for a guy who’s coached in the pros for a whopping 3 years? Could you imagine a job where every year you’ve improved as a coach is worth a million. At this rate, in 5 years he’ll be commanding upwards of 8 million a year. Is that how this works? Look, Garrett is a very talented offensive mind. But if he was so brilliant, why did Miami just let Dallas pry him from their staff last year? Why not make him the offensive coordinator at the time (O that’s right, they had to hire that Cam Cameron fellow).

You know how they say the backup QB is usually the smartest? Well in Garrett’s case, that just may prove correct. He was a backup for Troy Aikman, and they just love, love, love him in Dallas. So much so that Jerry Jones had to call a press conference last week to assure Wade Phillips he wouldn’t be fired in favor of the younger, flavor of the week Garrett. Now that’s rich.

And you better believe this deal gives Phillips “Kurt Warner status.” In other words, one simply decent season and he’s gone. Fans will call for the draft pick to come in, the future star. Garrett is the blue chip recruit coach at this juncture. He’s sure getting paid like it. Fans will look for Phillips to slip up, so they can stick in Garrett as the head man.

How bout them Cowboys?

How bout Jason Garrett? Go out there and buy a really expensive cookie Mr. Garrett, it’s safe to say you won’t need to worry about money for some time…

  1. Garret going to Dallas, should be writing on the wall for Phillips. Dallas has not a playoff game since 95. I think Jones is getting tired of not winning the big game, so he brings a great football mind in the hopes that it will light a fire under WP for next year. Dallas is a great option for him (Garret) all other teams are either rebuilding or just flat out lost (miami)…I see Garret as the head coach 09 season if Dallas does not go to the playoffs…and the money dont forget how much Parcells made in New York

  2. Jerry Jones is all about spending big and rewarding the flavor of the week. This new stadium they are building is off the charts. Jones is just throwing money at that venture. That’s the first of many examples of his over the top spending. He’s already spent over $60 million on Romo and now $3 million for his offensive coordinator, how much is he gonna pay Witten now? He had the best season of them all.

  3. Garret is a great young mind in this league, and has great potential as a future head coach, however I believe he clearly made the right choice by staying in Dallas. 3 million dollars to coordinate an offense inundated with talent? Marion Barber, Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Terrell Owens.. a play caller’s dream. The decision to stay in Dallas will prove to better him in the long run, as it will give him more time to grow into his full potential, because I, for one, am not sold on this guy just yet. He still has alot of maturing to do as a play caller, for at times he looks brilliant (first half of the giant game), the perfect mix of run and pass, leaving the gmen guessing and on their heels. Then the second half rolled around, where he completely abandoned the running game (marion barber rushed for over 100 yards in the first half) and his potent cowboys offense, which torched the giants for 45 and 35 points in their previous meetings, was only able to muster up a field goal against the depleted Giants defense.

This being said, he has great potential and will mostly likely mature into an elite coordinator, and one day become a head coach. But I think even he knew that after only 3 years as a coach, he was not quite ready to take full reign of a team. It will be interesting to see how the Cowboys perform under Wade Philips again next season, because we all know that “America’s Team” is in desperate need a playoff victory. Don’t’ be surprised, if the Cowboys miss the playoffs next year, or fail to advance further, to see Jason Garret head honcho in the big D.

  4. Jason Garrett? Wade Phillips? Jerry Jones? All three of these men are in desperate need of a playoff victory. And when I say desperate, I mean Next year, will be their Last year. After that, they will probably be run out of town, right along with Tony Romo and Jessica simpson.
