David Beckham Causes Stir in China But Doesn’t Play Hard

Beckham causes riot in hospital, then loses 0-3 in match.

David Beckham signed a $300 million dollar contract to hang around in America and make gossip news rather than win, and he has preceded to do the same with his visit to China these past few days. Here in the states, his Galaxy finished second to last in their conference with a 9-14-7 record. He only played in 5 games, scoring no goals and 2 assists.

In Shanghai yesterday, he played half-heartedly in an exhibition game, on a pitch that the Shanghaiist called, “the perfect playing surface–for beach volleyball.”

Ruud Gullit, coach of the Galaxy, said on the field:

The pitch is in bad shape and dangerous, there were stones and bones, shells, everything was on the pitch. It is pretty difficult to play on it, so I hope they can clean it…

Many of the fans there for Becks left with 20 minutes left when Beckham was substituted.

However, it was what happened at the hospital that he visited that really caused a ruckus.

His presence at the Xinhua Hospital visiting leukaemia patients caused an uproar with fans, staff, and media, forcing the hospital to be sealed off.

They did have time to snap some pics before he had to leave:

Beckham is extremely popular in China and appeared in a TV show there in December.
