Haunted Past: Some more crippling losses

A little love to hockey and a few other under the radar collapses that cost teams…

SCOTT JACOBS

Colin, interesting article about collapses that haunted teams for years on end… here’s a few that weren’t on your list that I would also consider big deals. Some recent, and some potentially into the future. Take a look, respond accordingly.

How about the Buffalo Sabres and some love for hockey… About 10 years ago or so, Mike Modano illegally stepped in the crease and scored the winning goal for Dallas in overtime to give them the Stanley Cup. Buffalo, has never come close to a championship since, even if they were very very good last year…( I forgot to mention the Bills and the Music City Miracle. If I’m correct, Buffalo hasn’t been to the playoffs since, and they haven’t been a contender in years…)

Another example: how about Sacramento and the Kings. When the Lakers beat them in overtime in game 7 of the western conference finals in Sac-Town with the Cowbells, the Kings were doomed to mediocrity after that…

How about Portland? The Blazers have yet to recover from losing to the Lakers in the conference finals, after blowing a game 7, 15 point lead. Who knows what the Blazers turn out to be had they won that game and gone onto the finals…

How about Cleveland? The Indians blew a 3-1 lead last year versus Boston, and though they have a young team, who’s to say they;ll get back. They lost the series with both of their stud pitchers on the mound. Like Marino back in 84′ they may not get back to the ALCS, nevermind the W.S. And with C.C. Sabathia a free agent at the end of the year, their window for contention may be closed.

How about Arizona and the Wildcats. They blew a 15 point lead with 4 minutes left to Illinois, costing them a chance at the final four. Since then that team has been nothing but me-first jump to the NBA players, and team has not returned to prominence.
