Brett Favre is a Disgrace if He Comes Back

Thankfully, Favre’s agent shot down rumors of a comeback yesterday, but that’s what you expect an agent to do. I’m not saying that Brett Favre is coming back. It would be irresponsible to say he was based on rumors from anonymous sources. But, if he does come back, or if he pursues it at all, then he’s a freakin disgrace.

He’s been contemplating retirement for THREE YEARS. Finally, he makes the right choice and retires. If he comes back, this will just cement his legacy as the John Kerry of quarterbacks, unable to make a decision, and unable to step out of the limelight after his time is up.

Last retirement season–or NFL football offseason–Favre at least kept his retirement pondering pretty short, so the Packers knew how to act, and he didn’t annoy us all with press conferences announcing that he needed to schedule another press conference later on to announce his decision like he did in 2006.

Like the Democratic party, he spent the entire summer contemplating what the hell he would do, and his indecisiveness hurt the team. Javon Walker left in free agency that year, the year after his best season, and Favre criticized the Packers for not doing anything in free agency. Well, how easy is it to make free agent moves when you don’t know if your franchise QB is returning?!

He then had one of his worst seasons in 2006, throwing 18 interceptions and 18 touchdowns and completing a career low 56% of his passes. 2005 and 2006 were his first two years since 1993 that he hadn’t throwing more TDs than INTs.

He improved his numbers last season, but the fact of his deteriorating abilities was evident in the closing minutes of the Packers playoff loss to the Giants.

Brett Favre, you had a good career. You played for the same team your entire career. (Throwing 4 passes for Atlanta doesn’t count as playing.)

Now it’s over. Don’t ruin it. Especially not in another team’s uniform.

  1. I agree. he went out almost on top, Green Bay needs to move on, the NFL needs to move on and start marketing their bright young stars, and this story needs to be over. And done.

  2. Don’t you think “disgrace” is a bit strong? If Favre ever decides to come back and play (which I don’t believe he will), that’s his peroggative - just like his decision to retire.

    Why do people like you keep bringing up the season the Pack went 4-12? he had one losing season in 16 years (two 8-8 years). he helped the Pack rebound to an 8-8 season then they go 13-3 and still you naysayers pound on him. he had one of the best years of his career this season and yet YOU say he was still deteriorating overall and that it was good he retired.

    let him retire. be quiet.

  3. […] starter. He’s Brett Favre, not Kurt Warner, you know. Anyway, here’s a comment from my post a few days ago on Brett Favre’s demise, arguing that Favre had one of his best season’s last year: Why […]

  4. I don’t think Favre is a disgrace if he decides to come back. Right now, he decided he is done playing. Later, he may change his mind. It wouldn’t be the first time someone has changed their mind. I think he’s entitled to do that. You know, things change, people change, and circumstances change. All of those things affect one’s decision making process.

    I do think if he were to come back, playing for any team other than the Pack would be like career suicide. I’m a huge Favre fan and even I would be disgusted by that. I think that would tarnish what he’s worked so hard for 17 years to build.

    All of that being said, I think he should stay retired. I, for one, don’t want to see him come back and spend his time backing someone else up. And even if he were to start, what does he have left in him? 1 year? 2 years? Then what do they do with Rodgers? Bench him when Favre comes back and then start him again when Favre decides he’s really done? I just don’t think it would be worth it - not that I wouldn’t want to see it. I love watching that guy play football. So, while I don’t think it would be a good idea, I don’t think it would be disgraceful, either, in my most humble opinion, but I respect your opinion, too.
