The Olympics. Without Top Athletes.
Who can blame Haile Gebrselassie, the world record holder in the marathon, for pulling out of the marathon in Beijing? Gebrselassie has exercise-induced asthma, and it appears that it would be hard to run in Beijing with or without asthma.
This isn’t a big deal to most people because no one cares about the actual games of the Olympics, but I myself am a big fan of the politics of the Olympics. These Olympics are being branded the Genocide Games because of China’s support of Darfur’s government and human rights abuses elsewhere. Along with supporting Darfur, supporting Burma’s militant dictatorship, censoring the press and internet, forced abortions, and the occupation of Tibet, you can add the conditions they are subjecting athletes to, to the list of Chinese abuses.
Seriously, though, Beijing’s pollution is blamed for 400,000 premature deaths a year. Is it really any surprise that only 8-out-of-50 entrants completed the Olympic Mountain Bike Test Event last September?
With so many self-righteous westerners protesting the olympics, Chinese are now protesting the protesters.
Here’s one website the Chinese probably haven’t censored: Anti-CNN. This site seeks to tell the truth about Tibet and about how Tibetans have been too violent throughout history in opposing the Chinese. No disagreement there. In recent weeks, they have attacked Chinese shops and killed civilians.
Western activists are probably going to take this protest against protesters as a human rights violation against them and start protesting the protest. “How dare they call the dalai lama a dalai liar?!”
I can’t wait to see this play out. Maybe we’ll get a reenactment Tiananmen Square against western protesters if this stuff continues.
