Hey, ESPN: Mike McColgan Says Boston is Titletown, USA…

ESPN is busy telling us who Titletown, USA is, and they even have profiled a few high school teams and Ivy League schools and stuff. While Los Angeles might be able to make an argument for Titletown, USA, I sadly agree with Mike McColgan, frontman for the Street Dogs, whom I interviewed yesterday that Boston is Titletown, USA, and I’m sure J Rose agrees as well.

Since ESPN’s SportsCenter has been interviewing so many idiots from each city profiled, maybe they should interview Mike and Rose as well.

They had an interview with Tommy Lasorda for their profile of L.A.

Come on.

What’s Lasorda gonna say besides “***** ****** ******ity ******?”

I already interviewed McColgan for SportsCenter, so here’s the interview (the sports part, anyway):

MB: Big Boston sports fan, I presume?

MM: I have a lot of sympathy to um… How do I say this without sounding to pompous or too pumped up on the Boston Red Sox?

MB: Yeah, well, everyone already knows you’re a Boston sports fan, so you’re gonna be pompous and arrogant.

MM: The Indians had a rough go of it last year.

MB: Well we helped you by sweeping the Devil Rays [last week].

MM: I’m talking last year. Indians led three games to one [in the AL Championship Series] then the Sox came back and won it. Yeah, it was amazing.

MB: To me, Boston sports is not punk rock sports. You’ve got the Patriots cheating, the Sox with the second highest payroll in baseball, and the Celtics just trading for two All-Stars to win a title. How can you support them?

MM: A lot of people are gonna hate on Titletown. And, as Bostonians, we expect it, but it is Titletown nevertheless.

MB: We’ll see what ESPN has to say about that. They’re going through every Titletown this week.

The rest of the interview was mostly about his service during the Gulf War.

  1. What is the definition of Titletown? If it means your city is decorated with things that literally say “titletown” then it should be Green Bay. If you’re looking for a lot of recent success and a rich history with incredibly loyal fans you’re looking at Boston. If you’re looking for volleyball titles Gainesville is your place. How about Los Angeles? If you’re looking for the biggest city without an NFL team then LA gets my vote. The whole Titletown thing is just ridiculous. How about a segment called, “You wish you were Titletown”… it can star South Florida’s pro teams misery from the last year… or Cleveland failing to win a title in forever… you get the point.

  2. I think I’m gonna have to look up the Street dogs on iTunes!

Love when he said “A lot of people are gonna hate on Titletown. And, as Bostonians, we expect it, but it is Titletown nevertheless.”

    Amen, brother.

  3. If you do check em out, they’re best songs are “In Defense of Dorchester” and “Fading American Dream.”

  4. Thanks for joining the TitleTown debate. Didn’t see any Ivy League schools on the list (unless you want to lump Stanford in with the East Coast elites). You can vote for Boston or one ofhte other finalists starting July 23 here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/titletown/index
