Loser-ville: Down to 16, Here We Go!

Thanks to you the sports fan, we’ve got our 16 nominees for Loser-ville, U.S.A. Here’s the criteria for how we’re going to do this. Because misery loves company. And sports fans love lists!

SCOTT JACOBS

This summer, you the sports fan nominated cities across the United States of America for the distinction of Loser-ville, U.S.A. We gave you one week to nominate the cities across America that belonged in the elite of the defeat. We gave you a basic criterion, and announced the 21 nominees. After deliberate thought and fan voting to eliminate two undeserving teams off the list, we have hit our magic number of 16. To simplify things, Juiced Sports has decided to base the competition on the four major sports (yes, we are counting hockey, deal with it!)

Through the month of August we will give you each city’s case for being Loser-ville, U.S.A.

We have bracketed the 16 nominees into four regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, and West). Once we give you the case for the four cities in a region we will open it up to voting (Because, we’re not interested in what we think, we want to know from you).

The city with the most votes FOR Loser-ville, U.S.A from each region will advance to the Unfortunate Four. From there we will interview some sports bloggers from the four finalists to give you other takes and opinions. Once each city has had their turn, we will re-open up the polls to determine Loser-ville, U.S.A.

Fans will have two weeks to vote. And the winner will be announced at which time we will crown them, Loser-ville, U.S.A

Heck, maybe we’ll have them face off versus Valdosta, GA for… oh, never mind.

Let’s get this party, or pity-fest I should say, started!…

SEEDS

WEST:
1. Seattle
2. Phoenix
3. San Diego
4.Oakland

Early Word: Seattle just lost their team. Is that good enough to push them out of the wild west?

MIDWEST:
1. Cleveland
2. Cincinnati
3. Minnesota
4. Milwaukee

Early Word: Loaded with heartbreak and title droughts, the Midwest is stacked from bottom to uh, bottom.

NORTHEAST:
1. Buffalo
2. Philadelphia
3. Washington D.C.
4. Charlotte

Early Word: The top seeds in the Northeast have seen their fair share of failure. But D.C. and Charlotte haven’t really done much of anything in a while, so they could be sleeper picks to make it out.

SOUTH:

1. Atlanta
2. New Orleans
3. Houston
4.Tampa Bay

Early Word: Atlanta was once dubbed the city of losers back in the day. How will they fare in the ultimate loser’s competition?

HOW WE’RE DOING THIS:

The Process will consist of research and opinion

Based on a 1-5 “L” ranking (1 being not that bad, 5 being awful) this scale asserts how the Loser-ville nominee stacks up based on our criteria:

Twenty First Century Blues
How bad have their pro teams done since 2000 (aka: Y2k)

Title-Frown:
How many titles have the city’s pro teams won?; A breakdown by sport, and number of seasons.

Twenty year Bubble Burst
How many championships has the city won since 1988. How many playoff appearances?

Guys, get in the car, we’re moving to…
The magnitude of impact a team’s move would have on the town. Would X team be missed?

Heartaches and Headaches
Some of the city’s memorable glorified failures and collapses

Should we really be in this “beat” company?
All these cities have had their moments, but when you think of losers, does this city truly, truly belong on the elite of the defeat?

Overall Fall
Number of “L’s” a city finishes with based on criteria

Popularity: 10% [?]

  1. I think I’d have to go with Seattle out of the west’s choices, that’s a pretty miserable sports city all around. Sure, the Seahawks made it to the Bowl a few years ago but that was one of the worst Super Bowls in history to watch, and the rest of the teams are awful. I wouldn’t go with Phoenix just because the D’Backs won it all in the past 10 years, so that’s something.

It’s an easy pick in the midwest – Cleveland. People talk about Philly suffering (trust me, I’ll get to that) but Cleveland is right there. Plus…they live in Cleveland, that’s rough. A tormented town.

Being from Philly I know as a fan of all 4 teams, we aren’t loserville completely. It usually ends depressingly, but the Sixers went in 2001, Eagles in 2004, and the Phillies just got good finally, oh and the Sixers are moving up in the woeful east. And I think the category “would the team be missed?” ices the fact that Philly wouldn’t “win” this division; people here live and die with their teams. So the right pick is Buffalo.

Atlanta out of the south, no question. Their fans are the worst in sports and so are their teams.

  2. Philly hasnt seen a title in a 100 combined seasons! But hey we won the ARENABOWL.

  3. seattle isnt that bad. they had the mariners get 116 wins(record), hawks went to the superbowl and were scammed by the refs, and the sonics are gone now. soo what does oakland have thats any better? worst football team ever, which cancels out there alright baseball and basketball.

  4. Seattle has ONE championship in their city’s history. Philadelphia hasn’t won a title in any sports since the early 1980’s, but you are right they did win the Arena Bowl!

ADD SHOW Aaron: good stuff. Though it appears you’ve gone with all one seeds. It will be a curious point if the stats and information we show for each city sways people any which way.

That’s the fun of competitions like this. Some people may think one city, some another city. It really depends what people think of when they think of the “worst sports city in the U.S.” I’m sure as heck excited to find out. We’ll be starting things within the week. Stay tuned!

  5. [...] to be over, and lo and behold, it’s Houston (christened as the number three seed in our tournament of losers) that has won his [...]

  6. i would probably put Cleveland or Cincinnati at the top of the list.

  7. I’ve said that least 4041324 times. The problem this like that is they are just too compilcated for the average bird, if you know what I mean
