Note to Ron Artest: Getting Into Fights for No Reason Isn’t a Part of Black Culture

Yao Ming is happy to have Ron Artest on the Rockets with one condition: “Hopefully, he’s not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands.”

Ron Artest was quick to dismiss Yao. He said he hasn’t changed. In fact, he said that getting into fights is part of black culture.

“I’m not going to take it personal. I understand what Yao said, but I’m still ghetto. That’s not going to change. I’m never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don’t think he’s ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture.”

Wow.

Play that back again.

“Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don’t think he’s ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture.”

What does “representing my culture” mean? Running into the stands and attacking a random fan who turned out not to have been the fan who threw a cup at you?

I’m not black–certainly not as black as Ron Artest–but I am pretty sure that getting into fights for no reason isn’t part of black culture.

Sure there are some bad people, like Ron Artest, but there are bad people in all races. Ron Artest, please shut your racist mouth up.

  1. Apparently, somebody has NO idea what they are talking about… As someone who grew up in a rough neighborhood, I can tell ya IT IS a part of Black culture for there to be knuckleheads who fight just to fight- but that’s not limited to Black culture only… Artest is not racist, he’s a misguided in his recent statements, but he’s no racist- I wish people would look past race in this country, but it would be impossible… Too many people make too much $ off of the politics of race in America- whoever wrote that RonRon ’should shut his racist mouth up’- get yer facts straight before ya go blogging on anything else…. True, Artest can be and is a knucklehead, but, in many ways, that’s all he knows..

  2. I don’t mean to say that Ron Artest is actually racist, but the nature of his comments, in essence, are.

Let me just say that black people like to get into fights for no reason because it is part of their culture.

    Wait, I can’t say that, I’m white.

Why the hell did Ron Artest say that? Why would he insult his own race like that?

He’s not racist, but he’s a fucking idiot.

I think you and I both agree actually.

You said, “I can tell ya IT IS a part of Black culture for there to be knuckleheads who fight just to fight- but that’s not limited to Black culture only”

I agree that there are knuckleheads in every culture who like to get into fights, but the nature of Artest’s comments was to say that ALL blacks fight, not that some of the knuckleheaded ones fight.

  3. we do agree. Artest is a jackass that typlifies the stereotype of Black athletes and Black men as a whole. I’m a wrestler and a MMA playa. I don’t go ’round bussin guys up just cuz I can… that’s foolishness. But let’s take a look at the culture that’s fed to these yung cats- they are bombarded daily with how cool it is to be a thug, a hustler, etc… No wonder guys in college and pro athletics get all twisted up… they try their best to emulate what they have grown up on… It’s a shame, yea… What a jackass Artest is- and Houston will once again go out in the 1st round
