Democrats vs. Republicans to Open the NFL Season?

NFL’s opening game between the Redskins and Giants was moved up due to the Republican National Convention, but look a little closer, and there may be more to the match-up than one may think

SCOTT JACOBS

On Thursday, the Redskins and the Giants will take the field to kickoff the 2008 NFL season. The game will be played however at 7pm Eastern time, instead of the usual 8pm or 9pm, because the RNC is going on at the same time.

But did anyone notice that there are some interesing parallels between the two teams that come across as almost a little political.

For example: New York’s primary color is blue. Washington’s is red. The Democratic party is blue. The Republican party is red.

One team is led by a black quarterback (Jason Campbell), while the other, the more experienced white one (Eli Manning). The Republicans are led by 72 year old John McCain, the Democrats are led by a promising young Barack Obama.

The fact that Washington is involved is sort of interesting too, being that D.C. is the capital of the U.S.A. and that in just a few months, a huge election is coming up.

It’s just sort of funny how things work out. Was it planned that way? Or was Washington merely looked at as one of New York’s chief rivals and a fitting opponent for opening night? Probably, the latter. But the fact that it’s red versus blue, the leaders are black versus white, and one team is from the nation’s capital is just all sort of fun when you look outside the field.

The only thing we’re missing is a female kicker. You know, so we can have a surprise player in the mix. Maybe someone from Alaska is available?
