Jim Zorn (Redskins Coach) Fails in His NFL Coaching Debute

Down by 9 with about 20 seconds left, no timeouts, and the ball in field goal range, Zorn called for the Redskins to go for a touchdown. They were already in field goal range. It would have been impossible to score a touchdown, then get the onside kick, then move the ball into field goal range, then spike it, then kick it. It would have been conceivable to kick the field goal then, then throw a hail mary for the touchdown after recovering the onside kick.

Not that it mattered, because they missed the touchdown anyway, on two tries. But it was a bad call.

Madden himself thought it would have been better to go for the field goal. And you know when Madden is right and you’re wrong, there’s a problem…

  1. Zorn is out of his element and Jason is Doug Williams in a west coast offense - it will never work.
