The Red Sox stun the Rays, coming back from a 7-0 deficit to win 8-7 on a walkoff hit in the ninth inning

SCOTT JACOBS

It’s the second largest comeback in baseball playoff history, and it comes from the team that just refuses to die! The Boston Red Sox, king of the comeback, have done it again.  Down three games to one, everyone writing them off, the Red Sox not only pushed their way towards another improbable comeback, they came back from the jaws of elimination to prolong a series that back in the top of the seventh inning looked over.

You just can’t make this stuff up.  Down 7-0 in the seventh inning, the Red Sox clawed back to score 4 runs in the 7th, 3 in the 8th, and 1 in the ninth to absolutley shock the Rays.  Now the series stunningly shifts to Tampa Bay, where all the pressure in the world will be on the Rays.  Josh Beckett gets the start against James Shields on Saturday night, and the Red Sox will have a chance to pull another rabbit out of their playoff hats.

Unbelievable.

That Phillies-Rays World Series all of a sudden isn’t a given.  Instead, it will be interesting to see how Tampa Bay responds coming back to the Trop, with a second chance to close things out.  This is the type of loss that could shatter a team’s confidence.  The Rays had two outs in the bottom of the ninth, tied 7-7, when Evan Longoria made a beautiful play only to throw the ball away, and the Sox never locked back.

How can you count out Boston now?  The answer: not sure you can.

Boston’s alive and kicking.  The Rays, are kicking and screaming!

  1. This was truly a game for the ages. This game could mean the world or it could mean that the Red Sox just delayed the inevitable. I believe that Shields should get the win tonight and secure the Rays birth into the World Series, however, if this game goes 7 the momentum swings in the Red Sox direction and they have alll of the experience to win game 7.

  2. This was an amazing game. People started to doubt the red sox but they should have known, the sox always come back! I think the rays have a very good chance of advancing on and I have to give them credit for doing so well this year. But my hopes are with the Red Sox cause I know they’ll pull through. Tampa has the home feild advantage but they sure dont have the spirit of the Boston Red Sox. I think Boston will win in the 7!

  3. Yeah, that was an incredible game, and yeah it could be the start of another amazing comeback. I’m not sure. The Rays are a great home team, but the Sox have already beat them once there and it was with SHIELDS pitching. Now I know Shields pitched great that day and simply got no run support, but still, a loss is a loss. So Boston is confident going in that they can steal game six. And I believe that in order to win this series the Rays have to win tonight. Losing game six, and leaving it up to a deciding game seven would be like the Spurs-Hornets series, in which the more experienced DEFENDING CHAMPION Spurs prevailed even though they were on the road. Those teams were in the same division and everything just like the Sox and Rays. So I think this is a must win for Tampa. Because if they loss, watch out!
