Max Deale Interview — How to Get Sold Out Tickets for Below List Price

My Man Max over at Max Deale.com, wrote a book this summer called Sold Out, So What? that gives 12 excellent tips on how to buy tickets to any event for under list price.

He also exposes some of the lies of the ticket-broker and scalper industry including the lie of sold out shows. Concerts and sporting events never sell out. There’s always tickets available for below list price.

You can view his site here and view more about his book here, and you can also read this interview I did with him:

-How did you go about writing and producing the book?

I put my first pen to paper in November of 2007. After writing the first draft, I hired a talented team of editors, cartoonists, designers, etc to come in and help me produce the final version that you see today. I did a lot of research on the subject of Publishing, and after reading all of the fine print, I decided to open my own publishing company to make my book available via my Website as well as on the Internet via online Distributors such as Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com. It will be available in certain stores in the near future and we look forward to expanding based on the demand.

-How did you publicize it?

On August 5th, 2008 I launched my media campaign by appearing on the Scott Ferrall show for Sirius Satellite Radio on the Howard Stern Channel. It was a crazy 35 minutes on air with him and it immediately put me on the “underground” map.

In Ferrall’s own words: “Max Deale’s book Sold Out, So What! is the greatest thing ever. Not only does he give you tips on how to beat the system, he shows you how to live the rockstar life without having to shell out a lot of your hard earned cash. Take it from me, a guy who loves sticking it to the man, this book is a must read. Shake it uuuuuuuuuup!!!!”.

The full length uncensored interview can be heard here. Caution: contains foul language and drug references. If you are listening at work, now would be a good time to put on the earphones: http://www.joenell.tv/SOSW/Max_Deale_on_the_Ferrall_show.html

The success of my appearance on the Ferrall show led to my first television appearance on the KTLA morning news, Los Angeles’s number one rated morning news show. That appearance got the attention of Fox Morning News LA’s Producer, who immediately emailed me with this “Hi Max. Just saw you on KTLA. Great job! What do we have to do to get you on our show?” Jean didn’t have to wait long, as Max appeared on Fox Morning News August 20, 2008

Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA was the first store to stock the book on their shelves and Virgin Megastores has signed a letter of intent to distribute there as well. For the most part though, I want to keep this book underground, so I am inviting people to join my affiliate program and have the book spread via word of mouth.

-Has the process of writing and promoting been as you expected it would be?

To be honest, I had no idea what I “expected” it to be. I just figured I would write it for me, and if other people liked it, then all the better. So far so good on that end. It’s been fun having people write me with their stories after they read my book. I love it.

As far as promoting goes, I’m making it up as I go along. I welcome anyone who may know what the hell they’re doing to step up and share their ideas on how to raise awareness. Right now, I am content with the whole underground movement that is happening organically. Everyone wants to beat “the man”.

-What has been the hardest part of the whole process?

The absolute hardest part is just getting the book in front of eyeballs. People who know about Sold Out SO WHAT! and have read it, love it. I am only one guy. I can only do so much. I am learning patience.

-Do you think you will write more books in the future?

We talked about turning the Max Deale character into a guide for the common man on how to beat the system on a variety of topics. Sort of a “beat the system for dummies” series. I have my next book picked out and have already contacted an expert in the field, so it will just be a matter of time.

-What has been your most memorable concert ever?

My most memorable recent Concert attended would have to be the Roger Waters DARK SIDE OF THE MOON at the Hollywood Bowl. Tickets for the show were going for $125 in the nosebleeds to over $500 up close. I was able to pick up a pair of tickets behind the sound board using a play called OUT OF THE BOX for $46 a piece. I’m a big fan of Classic Rock, so to see an original member of one of the greatest rock bands of all time do their definitive album live for $46…well, let’s just say it was something that I’ll never forget.

-Most memorable sporting event?

Oh man. I have been to so many great sporting events over the years. I will keep it current by picking my most memorable RECENT game.

I got two tickets to game 1 of the NBA Western Conference Finals with the Lakers vs. Spurs for face value ($80 in the 300 level of the arena. They were going for an average of $150 on the Broker sites) on the day of the game and then used a play called SEASON’S GREETINGS, which begins on page 64 of the book, to land us six rows behind the Spurs bench. We got to enjoy the entire first half in seats that were going for $1350 EACH on the Broker site before we had to move to our regular seats for the 2nd half. The Lakers came back from being 20 points down in the second half to win the game. It was AWESOME!

-What would happen to you if ticket brokers knew your real identity?

HELLO CANADA!

-What did you base your writing style on, if anything?

I guess you could call my writing sytle “two guys sitting in a bar”. I want to share my stories with you, and have a few laughs. I didn’t write WAR AND PEACE, that’s for sure.

-How long did it take to write and publish?

From the moment I put pen on paper to the day I went on the Scott Ferrall show, it was 9 months. My girlfriend and I laughed at the fact that it took the same amount of time that it takes people to have a baby. So this is MY first baby. Now I just have to raise the little fucker….
