There’s the Nike Swoosh, and then there’s the Sox?

Boston is making the Red Sox brand more recognizable (cough) by turning to navy blue

When the Baltimore Orioles unveiled their new logo earlier this offseason, it was an actual change from their previous identity. When they unveiled their new jerseys they looked… new! This week the Red Sox unveiled their new road jerseys, a new primary, and a new (gulp) hat. As if we needed another Red Sox hat!
The Red Sox changed their look from this to (gasp) this. They took a look that they’ve won a pair of World Series in, and ditched it for the look where Billy Buckner booted the ball. They changed the font color in their new secondary Sox logo from half red to all red, but then they unveiled “Boston” in blue on their road jerseys. What in the world is going on here? But my favorite: their change from the Red Sox logo in a circle to just the two hanging Sox. “There are very few brands that can be identified without words or letters,” said one member of the Red Sox organization. Nike is one, and the Boston Red Sox is another. I think the logo has an an amazing power.” The logo is what it is, but to compare it to Nike is absurd. The Red Sox have had those “hanging Sox” in their look forever. So my take on why they made the odd switch: apparently, they need more money so they can compete with the Yanks (at least that will help me sleep better tonight… haha).
The Yanks land C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, and to combat that Boston unveils it’s new jerseys. Edge: I think it just might go to the Yankees.
