Step up to the plate Pirates, you’re up next
In this recent era of woebegone franchises turning into championship surprises overnight, and with the city of Pittsburgh seemingly ruling the world, is it so much to ask of the Pirates to keep the downtrodden/Pittsburgh mojo thing going? Survey says: yes
SCOTT JACOBS
It’s borderline amazing that seemingly no one has brought this up in the aftermath of the Steelers wild 27-23 win over the revived Arizona Cardinals: the Steel City sports machine is rolling! With the Penguins making it to the Stanley Cup (yes we achknowledge that hockey is still a sport here… well, kind of), and the Steelers claiming a nauseating sixth title (c’mon guys, share, 15 franchises in the NFL have none, five have never even made it to the Big Game), Pittsburgh has officially moved into the discussion of that “it” sports town right now in sports.
Okay, so it’s not quite the 1980’s all over again, when the Pirates were actually (cough cough) respectable/even good, but hey, a town can dream can’t it? Can the Pirates, yes ladies and gentleman, the Pirates, make it three for three and get to the World Series in 2009?
Um, no. But it was sure as hell entertaining to write that sentence. Yup, entertaining indeed.
