Book Review: The Great Book of Sports Lists
8 Books on Individual Cities
MITCHELL BLATT
The Great Book of Sports Lists is an eight book series featuring top lists on Philadelphia, Denver, Washington, DC, Cleveland, Detroit, Seattle, L.A., and San Fran sports.
The books in this series are extremely detailed. I read the the Cleveland book and it’s 100+ lists.
The topics are wide-ranging and often city-specific.
Some of the ones that stick out at me from the Cleveland book are:
A 19-Part Tabloid Tribute to Albert Belle
Top Ten Glenville High School Football Players
Top Ten Steelers Who Were a Pain in the Ass
Top Ten Rookie Seasons
Five Dumb Quotes From Marty Schottheimer
There are a lot of lists written by local celebrities and athletes like:
My Toughest Opponents by Jim Brown
My Top Top Cleveland Sports Memories by Drew Carey
Top Ten Fights I Promoted by Don King
It’s an interesting book, a good light read for whenever, and it is also a window on the city, these cities being dedicated sports towns, and featuring other lists about the cities like best restaurants to take an out-of-town guest to and best radio personalities.
You can select your town’s book of lists here.
One thing I will say about the Cleveland edition is that it features old man and newspaper columnist Dick Feagler listing what he misses about Cleveland. Anyone from Cleveland knows that this is just a typical newspaper column for Feagler. He remembers when the Cleveland Public School District was among the best in the nation, for Madden’s sake.
