Double Coverage: The Pre-Season
Nobody’s off limits, no team is safe. JSB Columnist Mike Kaye gets you ready for week one, and looks back at a very interesting pre-season in the NFL

Football is arguably our country’s most sufficient and entertaining sport as well as one of the nation’s biggest subjects of cannon fodder. This new feature will give Juiced Sports the opportunity to look at issues and events in the National Football League from uncommon view points and to open up discussion between myself and readers as well as readers and their friends, family, and the guy you hate at work.
Every week, Double Coverage will be separated into two segments. The first segment will be an editorial with views on the sport, its athletes, its media coverage, and the wacky things that happen when all collide. The second segment will be used for player spotlights, game picks and explanations as well as Q & A. So enough explaining, lets smash our make believe wine bottle (Juicy Juice for those who cannot BYOB yet) on this newly minted ship (possibly the next Titanic).
1. The NFL is a league where players are on a very short leash with a player’s career life expectancy being a little under four years.
This preseason, teams gave up on talent quickly with 2009 2nd round pick Cody Brown (formerly of the Cardinals) and one of last year’s top free agents, T.J. Houshmandzadeh (formerly of the Seahawks) heading a group of cuts that prove the harsh reality that scouting both veteran and college talent and transitioning from team to team, college to the pros is not as easy as it looks.
* Notable Cuts: WR Mark Clayton (TB), QB Rhett Bomar (NYG, by the way, he have a fantastic preseason), S Quintin Demps (PHI), HB Derrick Ward (formerly TB, now HOU), QB Patrick Ramsey (NO), WR Josh Reed (SD), QB Matt Leinart (formerly ARI, now HOU), HB Willie Parker (WAS), S Jason Babinueax (SEA), HB Julius Jones (SEA) and S/CB Macho Harris (PHI).
* Notable Giveaway Trades: G/T Stacy Andrews (PHI to SEA), G/T Reggie Wells (ARI to PHI), DE Lawrence Jackson (SEA to DET), CB Alphonso Smith (DEN to DET), Santonio Holmes (PITT to NYJ, bank robbery and prison break all-in-one) and S Jarrad Page (KC to NE).
* The aforementioned transactions are an example of how players are easily replaceable in the league. Giving up on a player is one thing but to not get any adequate value for your investment is another. General Managers around the league want to put their best 45 players out there on game days and have great options on the rest of the 53-man roster. This is a business and the players job is to play and play well. This offseason has proven why paying for potential is in need of a serious regulation. Hopefully, this will be a main point in the future CBA negotiations.
2. I recently watched the last two episodes of Chad Ochocinco’s “Ultimate Catch” and let me say, I’m impressed.
Not only has Chad taken his great personality to the internet and created a fresh addition to the online sports new community, but he has also been able to take advantage of the mindless drones tuning into VH1 on Sundays. The show’s contestants are dull and obnoxious but they are also unattractive for the most part. Chad is brilliant on the show, introducing the girls to all his friends and family as well as marketing his sculpted six-pack like its for Budweiser (or Natural Ice if you’re in college).
The show much like Terrell Owen’s reality show (which airs back to back with “Catch”) has absolutely nothing to do with football but still probably has a larger audience than NFL’s Hard Knocks. Chad is literally the only likable personality much like T.O. on his show. Makes you wonder if next season will be a combine show and if their Bengal’s union is actually a marketing ploy.
Hurry-Up Offense:
* Speaking of Hard Knocks, over the last five weeks I’ve learned three things: Mike Tennenbaum is the most unlikeable person in the history of the show (he’s a liar and pretty much a pathetic weasel), Jason Taylor still hates the Jets (late, late here, late, late there) and the Jets coaching staff were apparently sailors in a previous life.
* The more moves new Seattle Head Coach Pete Carroll makes, the more I believe he is trying to sabotage the team. He gave away Darryl Tapp and Lawrence Jackson, the aforementioned T.J. Houshmendzadeh , and traded Josh Wilson for a pack of cigarettes (and I doubt Carroll even smokes).
* The Washington Redskins will start geriatric Joey Galloway and not-so-young Santana Moss at Wide Reciever this season, a group of scrubs (to be very polite) backing him up. Donovan McNabb: welcome back to 2002.
* Vincent Jackson reportedly agreed on a deal with an unnamed team but was not traded due to be his high-price tag set by the Chargers. Honestly, if he is worth that much to them, why not give him a decent extension?
* A little late but Ndamukong Suh’s tackle on Jake Delhomme a few weeks ago was one of the most vicious tackles I’ve ever seen. Delhomme could have not only broken his neck but actually could have done something productive for an offense (gain them 15-20 yards). That said I’m really disappointed with the decision to just fine Suh just $7,500 dollars which he makes in like five plays. The guy honestly should have been put in the corner for time-out for at least two games.
