Double Coverage: Week One

Double Coverage: Week One

Down goes the Jets, Kansas City has a real team (finally!), and analysis on that controversial Calvin Johnson touchdown that never was.  Mr. Kaye rewinds  week 1 and takes a look ahead to week 2

Every week, Double Coverage will be separated into two segments. The first segment will be an editorial with views on the sport, its athletes, its media coverage, and the wacky things that happen when all collide. The second segment will be used for player spotlights, game picks and explanations as well as Q & A.

Last week’s columns, part 1 and 2 can be found here and here.

After a tiring week and lack of important news, let us nitpick at the stupidity and awesomeness of the rich and even richer that make the league what it is.

1. Jets lose, Jet lose, Jets loooooossssseee! I am by no means a person that kicks another when they are down but this loss for the Jets against the Baltimore Ravens was priceless. All week long, we hear the media hype and the public statements by the Jets. When it came down to the game, the Jet’s fell flat.

The offense looked abysmal (or as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk claimed “Mark Sanchez is looking more and more like a right-handed Matt Leinart) and the Defense was mediocre with Anquan Boldin owning the NYJ secondary. I am all for competitive talk and banter but let’s be realistic, the Jets went 9-7 last year and hit a streak then signed a bunch of old stars and suspended or absent-father player-makers. At some point you have to figure in the rating-advantage the Jets bandwagon gives networks but it really is getting obnoxious. We get it, the owner or president of ESPN is from Connecticut so they probably like the Jets but really it just makes ESPN look second-rate to have spoon-feeding hype towards a team that honestly is not good enough to hold the Saint’s jocks.

2. On the flipside we had a fabulous late Monday game with the Chiefs and the Chargers. Let me tell you that the Chiefs honestly scare me. They are nothing but talent. They may not have the type of talent to play a 3-4 but their secondary and offense are exciting, young and to be frank, unstoppable in open field play. I’m pretty sure Jamaal Charles is as talented as Chris Johnson after watching his moves on his long TD run and after being a luster for Dexter McCluster in the draft, I feel he is worth the 36th overall pick that a lot of draftniks crapped on when his name was called. The Chiefs, after a long break, have once again become the most exciting team in the league.

3. A lot has been made about Calvin Johnson’s TD. My opinion is that even if his TD was slammed down they still should have counted it. The NFL is supposed to be fans of underdogs yet they don’t want the Lions to ever get out of the cellar. What would have been a positive watercooler talk for the week has now made the NFL look stupid. Take advantage of brilliance, whether it’s not fully rule-friendly or not. At the brink of a lockout or an 18-game season, the NFL needs to sell excitement to owners, players and most importantly, Megatron. Oh and fans…

4. I hear the Mike Vick talk everywhere I go. So let me just say this, Vick is not the answer. He had a good performance but what ESPN won’t show you is that he had a clear path to the endzone on a play he decided to throw and we had to settle for a field goal and that essentially cost us the game. Vick locks-on to receivers which is a problem that Kevin Kolb does not have. I have seen every play Kolb has played in since he was selected in the 2nd round in 2007. Kolb is the ideal West Coast Quarterback, he knows what he is doing. He only threw ten passes, three of which were while he was concuss. Vick is playing for a starting gig with the Bills or Vikings next year, not to be the Eagles quarterback of the future or present. The Packers did not have enough current footage on Vick and simply were not prepared for him. So media, fans, Barack Obama, Perez Hilton and Dan Patrick…leave the Philly QB situation to Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg.

Hurry-Up Offensive:

* How do you break something that belongs to a dead man? Put it in Kris Jenkins. Too early? Well I’m a huge believer in karma and you know the old adage, “Bad things happen to people who harass Mexican, female reporters.” As much as I am not a fan of the over-exposed Jets or Mr. Jenkins, it is most likely a sad ending to one of the better D-lineman of the decade’s careers. He was a member of the awesome Carolina Panther’s defense line that got them to the Super Bowl and I hope this isn’t the end for him.

* Clay Matthews may be a Lawerence Taylor in the making; he literally changed the game last week by himself. Sure, Charles Woodson was fantastic but Matthews knocked both Kevin Kolb and Leonard Weaver out of the game and was the reason Vick got gun-shy on the run in the endzone. He is the best defensive player in the NFC North already.

* Good to see the Jag’s Karim Osgood catch a Touchdown. If you’re not familiar with Osgood, he has gone to multiple Pro-Bowls for Special Teams as a member of the Chargers. I think Special Teams are very underrated by fans and media alike and Osgood is the prime playmaker on kick return defense. He signed with the Jags to be a wideout as well as a standout ST player and it seems Jack Del Rio is making that happen.

* Poor Matthew Stafford…it really is a shame that the Lions have gone from a potential seven win team to a most likely four win team after one game. I wish him well but a throwing shoulder…well…it’s a throwing shoulder and his job is to throw so it doesn’t look like we will see him for a while. I actually like Shaun Hill, he will have his work cut out for him against the Eagles pass rush.

* The Seattle Seahawk’s Mike Williams has to be one of the coolest stories of the year. Say what you want about the NFL’s cutthroat nature but there are a lot of great comebacks every now and then. Not only is Williams in the league again but he’s a starter. From one of the worst picks of the decade to out of the league to a starter is pretty impressive. Here’s hoping Troy Williamson, Jerome Simpson, Lendale White, Matt Jones and Matt Leinart catch at least something as close to the break that Williams has got.
