Double Coverage: Week Three
The Jaguars offense is well, flat out offensive, The Giants are out of control and why Carolina’s Steve Smith is a jerk
MIKE KAYE
Last week’s columns, part 1 and part 2 can be found here and here.
1) Okay…so I went to the Eagles-Jags game this past weekend and I have really nothing to say about the Eagles. Stewart Bradley is extremely important to the defense as he proved that against Jacksonville but other then that everything else was pre-established. My main thought process toward the game was how mediocre Jacksonville’s offense was. I went with my buddy Ryan (that joke will never get old to me), who I have mention in a few articles, and his dad, who are both lifetime season ticket holders for the Jags. Throughout the game I would look over to Ryan’s dad and agony and despair would fill his face.
The offense is more than predictable, I called at least five plays before they happened and called Asante Samuel’s INT a few seconds before it happened. David Garrard keeps proving my opinion as fact that he is one of the three worst starting QBs in the NFL (Ryan Fitzpatrick and newly named starter Jimmy Claussen are the other two with Alex Smith and Matt Cassell chomping at the bit). I’ve discussed the offense with Ryan at length and the general consensus is to fire the predictable offensive coordinator and promote Mike Shula, the son of Don Shula, to the leader of the O. Garrard is typically wavy in his performance, and say what you want about Jags fans but they defended him way too much. The last two games though have been inexcusable.
The Luke McCown ACL tear is the only reason he is still the starter but hopefully the waiver pick-up of Trent Edwards will be a solution. The Stanford grad is a pure pocket passer and likes throwing to smaller receivers with intermediate routes. Enter Mike Thomas. Enter Tiquan Underwood…My point and prediction is that Edwards will be the starter by week 8 and will carry over into next year while a 1st or 2nd round pick rides the pine, getting adjusted to his NFL surroundings and then all be well. Till then…who knows?
2. Tom Couglin is losing control of his team, this is something Tiki Barber and I agree on. Tiki is an obnoxious jerk but it’s hard to prove him wrong when the team is a bad 1-2 and he has one of the more talented teams in the league. Eli looks like pre-Superbowl Eli. Brandon Jacobs is heaving stuff into the crowds. And Justin Tuck is doing Subway commercials. I just think at some point Coughlin wore thin much the way I believe Rex Ryan will. It’s a shame that a coach as talented as Couglin would be put in such a position but that’s the biz for ya.
Quick Hits:
-Kassim Osgood jumped out of a 2nd story window to avoid the gunfire of a 19-year old women and her 20-year old ex. You’re not in San Diego anymore Mr. O, you’re in the murder capital of Florida. I’m sure you were just showing the young lady your special teams but I am glad you were able to defend yourself when a crazy ex-boyfriend started shooting. On the brightside, the Jaguars have been mentioned twice in this article, two times more then any other.
- Carolina’s Steve Smith was seen yelling at Jimmy Claussen last week after the rookie threw an INT. I’m all for veteran’s being fiery but Smith is a jerk. I think he is one of the most obnoxious of the WR in the league, and the only reason he isn’t tarred and feathered is because he plays for a team no one likes. He punched Ken Lucas, told Jake Delhomme the truth, and is now bullying rookies. You sir, are a douche.
- Pittsburgh is 3-0. Didn’t see that one coming but you have to take off your hat off to Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon, Mike Tomlin and Co. for playing without Ben and doing well. I actually think this lowers Ben’s legacy and value. What do you think?
- The Cowboys and Vikings won this past weekend, great. Well they are still 1-2 and Dallas has a bye week this weekend, we will see if they can sustain any momentum or if they will flake like they use to a couple of years ago. The Vikings don’t scare anyone anymore and rightfully so. Farve looks bad as does the defense for the most part. They have the recipe for duress.
