“Who” just won the World Series for San Francisco
SCOTT JACOBS
Their was nothing flashy, nothing fancy, just a collection of square pegs merging as one at the right time to help the snake-bitten, Bay Area title-less Giants capture their first ever San Francisco treat.
That and o yeah, unbelievable pitching.
The Giants won just 92 games in 2010, but they took a collection of scrappy misfits and created a champion. They won the NL west on the last day with a shutout over the Padres. They finished off the Braves in Atlanta, the Phillies in Philadelphia, and the Rangers in Texas.
They took the now famous line, “50 years of torture” and turned it into a battle cry. Fear the Beard became their rallying call.
They watched their rookie become a star. They picked up a scrappy big swinger from a cheapskate Marlins team basically for free and all he did was win the NLCS MVP and become the face of their run. Their shortstop nearly didn’t make the playoff roster and often guessed if this would indeed be his last year. All he did was win World Series MVP and hit the game winning 3 run homer. And it goes on and on…
Their interviews were awful, but their play on the field was not.
When history looks back on this team, they’ll say, “Who?” but “Who” just won the World Series title. “Who” just shocked the world. “Who” turned October’s post-season black and orange. “Who” showed that great pitching beats the hell out of great hitting. “Who” just ended a half a century spell, bringing a much needed championship to a colorful city utilizing an even more colorful assortment of characters.
“Who” has great pitching. “Who” pushed all the right buttons and made all the big plays. “Who” took down the unstoppable Phillies and the red-hot Rangers.
“Who” cares about next year right now. Let San Fran revel in their great coming together party. Whether they can do this again next year is irrelevant.
The Giants have goofy players and rely on quirky guys. How can you not love this team?
In an age of free agency spending free for alls and mega market teams versus medium market ones, to watch this kind of team win it all is exciting. It’s refreshing. It gives hope to the little guy, and I don’t care how cliche that sounds. These aren’t household names. This was unselfishness at it’s finest.
Before we look ahead to next year and close the book on this year, let’s remember the Giants. 2010’s team of Destiny.
In February it was “Who Dat.” In October it’s just “Who.”
