Double Coverage: Our 2010 NFL Awards (and All Pros)

The NFL season isn’t over just yet, but the regular season has come to a close. Our NFL expert hands out the hardware and picks his first ever Double Coverage All Pros

MIKE KAYE

As I lick my wounds from the Eagles early playoff exit, I would like to bring some positivity to Double Coverage this week. While we saw a lot of mediocrity this season (the first 7-9 division winner, Albert Haynesworth, and Derek Anderson’s crazy postgame rant), we also saw some pretty amazing performances and seasons from the top dogs of the league. Not to mention some surprise superstars. So let’s get down to business. The envelope please…

Before we get to the picks here’s a look at my Midseason Awards, way back in 2010.  Okay, got that out of the way. Here goes nothing.

Season MVP: Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
There is no question who the MVP is. I haven’t wavered once on this pick since Week 6. Brady was flat out awesome this season.

Comeback Player of the Year: Brandon Llyod, WR, Denver Broncos
Eagles fans will probably give me a lot of flack for this, but the truth is Mike Vick was back last year (I have another award in mind for him anyway).  Lloyd was an after-thought after forgettable stints in Chicago and Washington after showing promise in San Francisco. But this year, out-of-no-where, he silently led the league in receiving yards on a pretty mediocre offense. Lloyd is a Pro Bowler in every sense of the word this season and I hope he continues his once and now promising career.

Offensive Player of the Year: Mike Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles
Duh!  3,018 passing yards, 21 touchdowns to go along with 6 interceptions and wait, there’s more.  Vick also added 676 yards on the ground to accessorize with a career-high 9 rushing TDs. All of these stats came in just 12 games.

Defensive Player of Year: Clay Matthews, OLB, Green Bay Packers
There are a bunch of candidates in Pittsburgh, but that’s exactly why I’m taking the single nominee from Green Bay. Matthews is unreal.  Teams plan for him every week, but he’s pretty much unstoppable.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Sam Bradford, QB, St. Louis Rams
This is actually a harder pick then you would think. Bradford has had an unbelieveable year and added 6 wins to the Rams total from last year but  WR Mike Williams of the Bucs had 10 TDs and went over 1,000 yards recieving. I’m taking the former Sooner because he came back from injury to start every game of the season and play every offensive play.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Ndamakong Suh, DT, Detriot Lions
It was either him or Devin McCourty of the Patriots (6 INTS and a Pro Bowl) but Suh’s dominance on arguably the league’s best 4-3 line is what gives him the edge. Suh, who led all DTS with ten sacks as a rookie is a once in a decade talent. In a draft where Bradford went first and Suh second, neither team picked wrong.

This is where the awards get different…
