NCAA Tourney ‘11: A Sweet 16 Tale of the Tape
We’re down to just 16 teams. Let’s learn a little bit about them and their tournament history, shall we?
SCOTT JACOBS
Hundreds of schools compete in NCAA Division 1A College hoops, and we are now down to just 16. Our final 16 aren’t just diverse in location, they’re also diverse in history, undergraduate students, and heck, while we’re at it, the year their school was established. Our final 16 range from 34 wins (Ohio State, Kansas, and San Diego St.) all the way to 22 (Marquette). From 52 tourney appearances (Kentucky) to just 7 (San Diego St.) From an astounding surreal 18 Final Fours (North Carolina) to none (Richmond, BYU, San Diego St., VCU). From 7 titles (Kentucky) to none (shared by 6 schools).
UNC was the earliest of the 16 to be established (1789) with San Diego State (it’s not even a state people!) coming to fruition in 1897. Finally the undergrad students from our last 16 vary all the way from 38,479 (Ohio State) to a tiny 2767 (Richmond).
This is the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 tale of the tape. Juiced Sports style. And while we’re at it, check the black bar at the bottom of each school. It’ll tell you just how far or close (talking to you San Diego State) your school is playing to their regional and who some notable alums (though I’m sure there’s many I missed) attended that institution.
