NFL Free Agency ‘11: The Top Wide Receivers
The third in our continuing series, The Best of. Today we lock in on the top 5 wide receivers in this year’s free agent class.
MIKE KAYE
They spread the field, they change the game, and they make the big block that the casual fan rarely takes notice of. They are the wide receivers. The playmakers, the game-changers, and more often than not, the divas on an NFL team. They are the talent. The hands. The stars. This year’s wide receivers class is loaded. Take a gander.
Wide Receivers
1. Sidney Rice/ Minnesota Vikings
Possible Destinations: STL, CLE, SD, CAR
Rice is a rare talent with size and speed and is a true number one receiver. While Cleveland and Carolina may offer him more money, I think St. Louis is the best fit. Say what you want about Josh McDaniels but the dude knows how to use his wide-outs. Evidence: Brandon Lloyd going from 4th stringer to leading the league in receiving yards and McD was the Offensive Coordinator to the record breaking 2007 Patriots which featured Randy Moss catching over 20 TDs.
2. Santonio Holmes/ New York Jets
Possible Destinations: CLE, ARI, NYJ, STL, MIN
Holmes proved to be reliable for Gang Green down the stretch of the season. I think it is almost a lock for him to continue to be part of the J-E-T-S.
3. Braylon Edwards/ New York Jets
Possible Destinations: See Santonio Holmes.
Edwards isn’t as consistent as Holmes but could prove to be just as valuable. Look for him to be resigned as well.
4. Devin Aromashodu/ Chicago Bears
Possible Destinations: MIN, OAK, CLE, STL, NYG
The Giants really don’t have a burner at wide-out and Aromashodu is an excellent solution to that. He may have been cut by the Bears but he can easily take Steve Smith’s job if S-squared is still harboring injuries or let go.
5. Mike Sims-Walker/ Jacksonville Jaguars
Possible Destinations: NYG, STL, MIN, CLE, BUF
Sims-Walker was very overrated for Jags fans during his stint with Jacksonville. I think he is a possession receiver at best and will never be a number one guy because he is way too inconsistent. Cleveland needs a number one but also could use a utility receiver to pair with Brian Robisike, Mohammad Massoqui, and a potential first round WR. Walker lands there.
