Filthy rich son + stupid drunken mother = stupid drunken mother, but why is this mainstream news?

LeBron James may be The King (to some) but his mom Gloria is certainly no queen.

By now you’ve all heard the story where Gloria James had an affair with then teammate Delonte West.  Well, now word comes out of Miami that on Thursday, Gloria, ever the class act, was arrested at the Fountainbleau Hotel, for get this — allegedly slapping a hotel valet in the face after he brought back her car.

Why is this even news?  Because anything LeBron James related seems to be a story in our public’s eyes in this 24 hour instant information age.

“Ms. James was apparently intoxicated as she had bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath,” police said in a statement.

Classy. Class. Class. Class.

Now for those of you who don’t know, LeBron James is an only child, and Gloria had him when she was just 16, but you’d think that her son having more money than God would prelude her from doing really stupid things. But Charlie Sheen fever* can hit any celebrity apparently, even if the only reason anyone has a clue who she is comes from the fact that her son is a fantastic basketball player.

*Charlie Sheen fever: stupid, asinine behavior that only gets more publicized because you have lots of money, and your son and/or parent was someone famous.

I don’t know, by talking about this, I’m probably only adding more fuel to this non-story of a story.  But I can’t help at being fascinated by the pointlessness of it.

Leave it to the media to cite this as a potential distraction for LeBron as the Heat close out a topsy turvy season.  Hello, LeBron made his Decision in front of a zillion people and took more scrutiny than any athlete in history for a free agent defection, and this is going to be what ruins the centerless Heat team he signed with? Because D-Wade’s child custody hearings clearly affected his ability to shoot a round ball in a cylindrical hoop.

Guys like LeBron and Wade are people, yes, but at the end of the day their focus is so razor sharp that they see nothing but the ring at the end of the media circus.  They knew what they were getting into.  If LeBron breathes the wrong way it’s a story. A non-story story.

His mom getting arrested for being a drunken idiot at 4:30am is beyond stupid.  It’s sad and not even close to the first time.  In 2006 she got a DUI and kicked out the window of a police car after being detained. Nice.  She also was charged with speeding, reckless operation (whatever that is), disorderly conduct, and well, you get the point.

Clearly she’s got problems.

But her problems shouldn’t be in my news.

As far as I’m concerned, she’s a nobody who birthed a somebody.  If Taylor Swift’s mom got arrested for the same thing would anyone care?

Yeah, I thought so.
