NFL Free Agency ‘11: The Top Tight Ends
The fourth in our continuing series, The Best of. Today we take a look at the tight end market
MIKE KAYE
The Best Of: QB / RB / WR / TE
We’ve discussed the top quarterbacks available. We’ve broken down the best of the running back class, and we went deep with the top wide out talents on the open market. Those three positions are essential for an efficient balanced offense, but we tend to overlook the value a tight end can bring to a team. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and a few others aside, tight end is by far the least glamorous offensive position that can potentially make a play. Let’s add a little glamor to this hard nosed position. The top 5 tight ends in the 2011 Free Agency class.
Tight Ends
1. Kevin Boss/ NY Giants
Possible Destinations: STL, MIN, CLE, ARI, MIA
Boss is an average starter in the NFC East but would most likely excel in the NFC West. Spags is the former D-coordinator of the NYG so he may be able to use his ties to recruit the Boss.
2. Zach Miller/ Oakland Raiders
Possible Destinations: OAK, CLE, NYG, ARI
Miller could flirt with Arizona which is his home state but I think he will stay in Oakland due to the amount of money Al Davis throws at his boys.
3. Bo Scaife/ Tennessee Titans
Possible Destinations: CHI, ARI, PHI, CLE, MIN
Minnesota likes to splurge on over-priced Tight Ends, See their roster for proof.
4. Desmond Clark/ Chicago Bears
Possible Destinations: SEA, OAK, PHI, ARI, ATL
At this point in his career, Clark is mainly a backup and could do well blocking with Tony G on two-TE sets.
5. David Thomas/ New Orleans Saints
Possible Destinations: NO, ARI, TEN, CLE
Thomas made some big catches during the Saints Super Bowl run and has become the second Tight End in New Orleans, but with the rate Brees throws, he has a huge part in the offense.
