Campus Socialite DJ Competition hits Indiana University on Blitz and Beatz Tour

Campus Socialite is touring the great college campuses and holds a DJ competition in Bloomington, IN (Indiana University) Friday night.

MITCH BLATT

Last Friday Night, we were dancing on the floor at the Campus Socialite DJ Competition as Campus Socialite’s Blitz and Beatz Tour got the weekend started at Indiana University.

The night featured 6 DJs. (Unfortunately I was only able to interview 5 of them.) They were DJ Schroeder, Arun Don, Jordan Papolos, Edit Undo, DJ Nemms and Ruslan Matveyev.

Arun Don

Arun Don has the stage name DJ Descent, and he has quite the story behind the name: “This summer I was on a plane coming from Miami to New York, and the engine almost blew out. It almost crashed. We would have died. I realized I’ll never take another day for granted. In my music, I don’t do it for the competition. I don’t try to be above anyone. I do it for the music.” He’s from New York and studying at Indiana University. He’s been DJ-ing since he was 14, but he didn’t get serious about it until 1.5 years ago. He also was one of the DJs at Campus Socialite’s tailgate party this morning. Listen to his remix “The Drop” at Soundcloud.

DJ Nemms

DJ Nemms (Mike Nemirovsky) is a junior at Indiana University majoring in Arts Management. He’s been DJ-ing for 7 years, and has done colleges including UCLA, Miami (FL) and Illinois as well as many parties at Indiana University and spring break in Mexico. Indiana University “has by far more fun than any other school I’ve been to,” he said. He’s from Philly, and there were two other DJs from Philly competing. None of them were very happy about the Phillies losing. He likes to play club/electro music, and you can here some of his mixes at his website off his album M&NEMMS Volume 2. He also DJ-ed at the Campus Socialite tailgate this morning.

Jordan Papolos

Jordan is quite the photogenic DJ, so he got the most pictures taken of him. He said he was “trying to bring East Coast flavor” to the competition and the other events he DJs. (He’s from Westport, Connecticut.) He’s a sophomore at IU studying Biology, but more interesting is that he has studied Chinese for 5 years, so I carried on a short conversation with him in Chinese. He visited China last year and met a Chinese student who is now at IU studying abroad, and they are roommates. Maybe he can bring some Chinese flavor for his next set. Jay Chou or “I Love Tai-Mei”, perhaps?

Edit Undo

Brandon Kaplan took the stage name Edit Undo because he wants to “edit and undo” the thought that DJs should stick with one genre. “You’re going to be hearing rock, Motown, house, hip hop and much more,” he said. “If I’m not bringing at least four genres, I’m not doing my job.” He elaborates on his Facebook page: “Undo the preconception that a DJ should stick to one genre. Undo the belief that other people’s work can’t be manipulated and edited into new creative art. Undo the negative preconceptions we have about other people, other music and other cultures. Undo it all and start fresh.”

He’s a senior studying Telecommunications, and he has been the DJ at Indiana University basketball games for the past 3 years. Check out his website at Edit Undo Music.

Randy Schroeder

DJ Schroeder has lived in Bloomington for 3 years and has been spinning in his basement for 10 years and had the chance to get out in front of a real crowd for the first time Friday night. “I love this event. I finally got the chance to get out tonight and do it,” he said. “I’m used to just being the best DJ in my basement.” He said he was born with a DJ name, so he uses it as his name. Listen to some of his tracks at his Soundcloud page. And don’t talk to him about the Phillies…

Ruslan Matveyev
Ruslan Matveyev goes by the name DJ Eyecon. He’s from Chicago (technically the northwest suburbs of Chicago), and he’s been DJ-ing for 4.5 years. I wasn’t able to interview him directly, but I caught up with him on Facebook, and he said: “I started my own entertainment company a few years ago and I’ve dj’d numerous events, ranging from clubs in downtown chicago to a school prom. I spin a variety of music, but I focus on dance (all types of music that pump people up).”
