Still not jumping on the Tim Tebow bandwagon

SCOTT JACOBS

Let’s just get this out there — Tim Tebow is not a franchise QB. Not yet at least. And he’s not even close.  No win over the ’so bad it’s actually kind of funny’ now 0-6 Dolphins will change my mind on that. Especially when for three quarters plus he took the term suckitude (if there was such a word) to a whole new level of hilarity.

All the analysts could say about Tebow was that he had some really nice runs — which he did — but nothing about him besides maybe the part where he is a leader, makes me believe or even remotely convinces me that he will ever be anything (as a QB) in the National Football League. Tebow was listless, lost, and his accuracy was so bad that he would have had trouble throwing a beachball in the ocean while standing on the beach — for those first three quarters.

Tebow Time is a crock.  The fourth quarter may be Tebow’s time but watch what happens when Denver plays real teams, not relegated in humiliatingly comical coaching messes and playing with a backup quarterback who may be leading the ship that sinks an 0-16 team, the year after being the starter for a team that won just 2 games.

Watch what happens when Denver plays teams that actually know how to find the endzone. Miami’s offense is so anemic that they couldn’t find the pylon for nearly 2 whole games. The two teams started out 0-15 in converting third downs, before Miami mercilessly broke what was spiraling into what could’ve become some kind of record.

Name a talented, Dolphins player that any team would really want on their team and I’d give you Cameron Wake, maybe Daniel Thomas, and of course Jake Long. The rest are all disposable, including Brandon Marshall, who simply keeps this debacle interesting every time he opens his mouth.

Tebow’s comeback was the banner moment on a NFL day of sheer ineptitude. Six interceptions in Oakland, 6 points winning the game in Cleveland, Philip Rivers just mailing in the final throw of the game for San Diego, and the Sunday Night football game of the week being over by the first quarter were just some of the many lowlights of a considerably lame week 7.

So Tebow gets his moment — and rightfully so, he did something that rarely gets achieved.  But Miami went for two when there was no reason to. They played conservative — like they always do. And they called off the dogs late in the game, and went to some kind of stupid prevent defense when it was crystal clear Tebow had no choice but to throw.

So yeah, while Tebow showed flashes, I think he’s a product of the information age. He’s a good kid, with a good heart, that’s as over-hyped as anyone in sports. Denver was more afraid of him than Miami, and when he did throw his passes were usually off by a country mile.

He may very well develop into a winner and break the mold of prototypical NFL QB.  But all I see when I watch Timmy is an awkward player who has the intangibles but not the fundamentals. Denver was minutes away from being shutout for the first time since 1992, when Tebow decided that passing for more than 40 yards was necessary to be competitive.

So let’s give him a chance: it’s not like Kyle Orton is a future Hall of Famer. We know what he brings.

As for Tebow, I still really don’t know what to make of him. Three and a half quarters of some of the worst football I’ve ever seen, shouldn’t trumpet 5 minutes of inspired football, even if it was the difference. As I said, let’s see what happens when Denver plays a real team. They better not play like this.  Because 3 and a half quarters in, if they play like today, they won’t be down by 15.  They’ll be down for the count.
