<no frames>
Tiki Trashes Manning, Coughlin as His First Acts on TV

After criticizing Eli Manning for failing to be a leader, he is calling out coach Coughlin for forcing his retirement. Not that there’s anything wrong with taking on Coughlin, but the words used are ludicrous. He said that his good play kept Coughlin employed as coach. Makes sense doesn’t it, considering Coughlin imporved Tiki’s play?

Before Coughlin: 773 yards per season, 4 TD, 6.2 fumbles
With Coughlin: 1680 yd, 1.333 TD, 3 fumbles

According to Tiki, “It’s a double-edged sword, because as much as Couch Coughlin helped me, I also helped Tom Coughlin.”

Well, yeah, that’s how most relationships work. That was the New York Giants, you played for, not the Dallas Cowboys, where a player can force the coach to retire. That and more is featured in his new book Tiki: My Life On and Off the Field.

As for Eli Manning not having leadership, Manning says that Barber wasn’t doing a very good job of leading when he criticized Coughlin all season or let the media know about his retirement. Good quotes to use when shooting back, but Barber surpassed 200 yards from scrimmage against Dallas the week after he made the announcement. Irvin and the rest of the media shut up their criticisms then.

Still, one good games just means that you are a good player. You can win a single game with bad chemistry, but it might hurt you throughout the season as a whole. Only the Giants players know the full effect of Tiki’s grumblings.

Furthermore, it is interesting to wonder how Manning and Barbers’ relationship really is. Is Manning actually offended by Tiki’s comments? At first, he simply brushed them off, but then he came back with the same charge against Tiki. Perhaps this is just Manning trying to handle criticism, but maybe it’s more?

After all, Tiki did seem to be something of a loner and free spirit. He wasn’t known to have much of a relationship with the rest of his teammates. For him to be saying Manning has poor leadership skills (other than the fact that it is probably accurate), could mean a lot less to him than it does to Manning. He could be thinking, “I’m just telling the people what they want to know. I’m not bashing Manning,” whereas most former or current athletes wouldn’t want to say those things about their teammate, even if true.

<no frames>
Expect Week Five

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel announced today that Charlie Frye will start week one against the Steelers. No surprise there. He will probably start weeks 2-4, too. Crennel has tried to be secretive about his thoughts on the quarterback position this preseason, while at the same time dismissing Quinn for holding out. It hasn’t been working. Everyone in Cleveland knew that Quinn wasn’t going to start. I’m just letting you know why he probably won’t start until week five.

First of all, he’s a rookie, and blah blah blah blah. He does happen to be one of the more NFL-ready rookies to play quarterback in the past few years, and he would probably be starting even earlier than week five if it weren’t for one thing: the offensive line. Ryan Tucker is suspended four games for steroids use, and LeCharles Bentley is still (we are told) working on a comeback. Bentley’s “comeback” attempt has been hiden from the media, so I’m not too confident about that, but Tucker being back by week five is a sure thing. Adding to that, is the fact that a number of minor injuries have kept other linemen out for some of the preseason games, and the new unit hasn’t been able to play togethor. The Browns wouldn’t want to start Quinn’s career behind that shoddy line. The always present risk of injury is there, but moreso, how much benefit would he get learning behind such a line? Whether he plays 16 games or 11 games his rookie year, won’t make a huge difference, and playing 5 of his first games while having to run around all day won’t help him learn the game.

Finally, the Browns are clinging to that one small hope that they might actually compete this year. Charlie Frye, with his experience and ability to run around, makes him a better bet to win behind a subpar line and against the three division opponents the Browns open the season with.

<no frames>
Well, The Cavs Are Done…

Have the Cavs eaten to much ice cream and gotten a “brain freeze?” They have talked all last year about trying to get Kevin Garnett as a sidekick for LeBron–but who gets Garnett? No one else but Boston! Now they will have to face the Pistons and Celtics.

What did the Celtics have to offer? Even on a bad foot, Larry Hughes would be better than “wrong-rim” [Ricky] Davis. Were the Cavs even in the mix for Garnett?

I guess last year was the end of the lucky years for the Cavs–in a few years, when Garnett decides to retire, the Bulls will upgrade and the Cavs will continue being the mop of the East until LeBron Jr. becomes eligible for the draft.-Jorge, Lakewood

Where do I start? First of all, this guy thinks the Cavs are done forever. Does he know who LeBron James is? The Cavs have the best player in the league for at least 10 more years. Does he know who played in the Finals last year? He also bought into the hype surrounding Boston. One-and-done is nothing special. They have two overrated jumpshooters in Pierce and Allen, an aging center in Garnett, and a bench that couldn’t win a WNBA game. Garnett has been in the league for 12 years, Pierce 9, and Allen 11. In a few years, after the Celts have achieved two early playoff exits, they will be back on their way to being the worst team in the league.

My additions of interest for the Cavs are PG Troy Hudson and forward James Posey. With the retention of Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic, this could form four members of the bench rotation of the Cavs. What are the Cavs’ interests other than these?-Kevin, Cleveland

Well, I can say for sure that Posey isn’t one of their interests. It would require a lot to pry him from Boston. And considering that he is signed with Boston, he’s not on the free agent market anymore. He does have a funny name, though.

Baseball

The Nixon signing was a failure. Nixon is a shell of what he was, and he’s taking away valuable at-bats from Frank Gutierrez.-Craig, Columbus

Nixon has been batting .256 this season, which is about how he was expected to do. No one was expecting him to play as well as he did in his prime, but you, Craig. He went .315, .275, .268 in the three years respective to the Tribe signing him. He was the leading batter for them during their 14-18 slump the month and more after the All-Star break.

<no frames="">
College football returns to action, baseball’s division races get intense, the Orioles get embarassed again, and more, in the third edition of the Week is Over Already? back to school edition.

You can take those headphones off now. After months of nothing but baseball, and trying to blare out all the exhausting Yanks-Sawx talk, you can look up, wipe the drool off your face, and enjoy a trip back into the sports world. Baseball is now the backdrop to a sports calendar getting more exciting by the week. And that’s the way we here at JSB like it!

Now, a recap of the week that was, because we know you don’t want to forget a thing about these last seven, illustrious days.

Michi-gos?
It’s a yiddish word for load of crap. As in Michigan’s effort against Appalachian State. What happened to the Maze and Blue? They… fell? They got embarrassed, humiliated, exposed in front of the entire nation. What a way to open up the new Big Ten network. With a game that results in the first ranked D1 team (or is it FCS? or FCB ugh, I don’t know), losing to a 1 AA team. Michigan may recover, but the voters and press will hold this against them for a long time.

Virginia Tech returns to action
It’s over. The long wait to get back on the field that is- for the Hokies, who played a less then inspirational game in defeating a game East Carolina team. I’ve already been told football doesn’t cure tragedy, but Va Tech needed something to look forward to– don’t you think? Although this wasn’t the glorious return that they had probably all hoped for. 17-7? It’s uh, a win, but not exactly awe-inspiring.

Notre Dame gets stung– and hammered
Worst opening home defeat ever? Wow, all these weeks of QB speculation really helped your QB’s Charlie Weiss. Can we finally put to rest the talk that the Irish will be good this year? After getting slaughtered 33-3 at home nonethless, Irish fans probably aren’t happy. Is it safe to say that the Irish aren’t BCS bound this year? Cause I’m going to say they’re not. Not happening Notre Dame. I mean Over-rated U.

0 for Orioles as Baltimore’s season from hell continues
A week after giving up 30 runs to Texas, Baltimore manages to sink deeper into the “wow I’m really starting to feel sorry for them” discussion, getting no hit by a Boston rookie pitcher in just his second start. No matter how much money you make, this Orioles team has to be begging for this season to just end already. Please, mercy on their souls.

Playoff races heat up
This week saw five division races really explode, as five division leaders squared off against the number two in their division. This is what this week proved:
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are better than Seattle. The Red Sox still have to watch their backs. The Mets are no shoe in to clinch another division title. Not with Philly’s play lately. The Central is a division that should just give up their playoff spot to a more worthwhile team. The NL West is going to be a dogfight, as Arizona and San Diego square off for three more starting Monday in Arizona.

Some final thoughts on the week:
Michael Strahan reports to camp. He’s back for his 15th season. Much adu about nothing this whole offseason.

Leftwich is out. Garrard is in. Jags go with younger, more mobile QB to lead their offense. For their sake, I hope Garrard is more consistent then he has been in the past.

Team USA wants it this time. With their showing at the FIBA Championships, Team USA is prepared to finally start taking this whole, “U.S. basketball apocalypse” thing seriously.

One week closer. The NFL gets back up and running really really soon. In the meantime, don’t overdose on HGH (Rodney) or steroids (Tim). And please kids, remember that cool punter named Scott Player, the last player you will ever see in the NFL to wear the one bar on his helmet. Player was cut this week by Arizona.

Like the Cubs (without the whole $300 million dollar off season part) a lot of college football programs can point to there slate of 12 games this year and say, we can do this. But I hate to break your bubbles folks. A lot of that is a whole lot of you know what. So lets separate fact from fiction. Dilusional from disrespectful. This is what college newspapers around the country are saying about their teams, and this is my rebuttal.

The Reflector: Mississippi State
“What dream world is Crooms living in. His deal is done in Starkville.
He may not last the seaon. Get a damn defense at least. And you do not
have the personal to throw the dam and the lot.” – some guy named Raider Nation.

Mr. Raider, or is it Mr. Nation? we’re with you on this one all the way. Croom was a nice story being the first black head coach in the SEC, but he seems to be working on borrowed time right now. Mississippi State used to be good. Remember those days? Nah, me neither.

Daily Illini: University of Illinois
“It may not be the most challenging game of the season, with Wisconsin and Michigan looming in the background of the schedule, but the Missouri game will be far and away the most challenging non-conference game that the Illini will play this year.” – Daniel Johnson

Mr. Johnson, if Missouri is the most challenging non-conference game on your schedule then you guys should be in good shape. With Zook’s masterful recruiting you guys are supposed to be on the rise right? No, well, I guess losing to the Tigers isn’t the best way of showing improvement. Maybe that recruitment class will suddenly become veterans overnight. If not, well you guys are used to losing anyways.

Kaleo: The Voice: University of Hawaii
“One of UH’s toughest opponents this season will be their less-than-stellar schedule. Game one for Hawai‘i features the Bears of Northern Colorado University, a Division I-AA opponent that has many critics already writing off an easy win for the Warriors – The Sports Network predicted a 55-point victory for UH. The Bears are one of two Division I-AA opponents UH will face this season and are coming off a 1-10 performance in 2006. While most audiences are well aware of the university’s efforts and the team’s desire to play a more demanding schedule, some critics will still need convincing. Nonetheless, the schedule is one thing the Warriors cannot control.” -Rebecca Gallegos

Interesting. Gallegos hits the nail right on the head for Hawaii, which will be nothing more then a fun little side show until they start playing some real teams. If Hawaii wants to be more then just a cool WAC team, they’re going to have to overcome their far location from other schools and take their act on the road. The fact that Hawaii, a top 25 team, has two I-AA opponents on their schedule makes it even easier to take them less seriously then before. Of course, as Michigan showed, don’t take those cupcakes likely. They might turn around to bite you in the butt.

The Miami Hurricane: University of Miami (FL)
“There you have it; ten wins before the bowl. Are these predictions optimistic? Perhaps. But with such a strong defense, any game could be a winner. Miami will win at least one of its marquee matchups (Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Florida State, Virginia Tech), and maybe two. If things turn out the right way, it could be a very happy winter in Coral Gables…for a change.” – Matthew Bunch

I think this is a little delusional. Miami should have a bounceback year after winning just 7 games last season, but after a very unconvincing bowl win over Nevada in the MPC Computers Bowl, what’s there to convince me that the Canes improved that much this off-season? The coaching change is good for Miami. Coker was a sitting duck for a few years out there in Miami, and a change needed to be made. Enter Randy Shannon, a hard nosed, no nonsense coach who should bring back some swagger to “The U”. That said, Miami still has an unstable QB situation and a major dropoff in talent at the WR, TE, and RB position then in year’s past. Great defense, but until Kirby Freeman proves he is the real deal, Miami won’t win 10 games this year.

Central Florida Future: University of Central Florida
“I’ll probably get a ticket,” Myers said, “but if I don’t, life goes on.”- UCF student in regards to ow he’ll react if he doesn’t get a seat for UCF’s stadium opening game versus Texas.

See this is the problem with some schools. Football is a big deal at so many colleges in the country. Schools like USC, Notre Dame, Florida State, and Auburn worship their players like they’re gods among men. But at UCF, where a football tradition is a long ways away, it just isn’t a huge deal. Sports in general isn’t big there, where there wasn’t enough support for a track team, so they got rid of it, leaving them with just 6 men’s teams. That just isn’t going to cut it, not with close to 40,000 students.

Daily Trojan- University of Southern California
“There are a lot of questions surrounding tomorrow’s game against Idaho, such as “will USC cover the spread?” and “who do you think will win the coin toss?”
The turning point in tomorrow’s contest will likely be when the Vandals get off the team bus. Quite frankly, the coin toss may be Idaho’s best chance at beating USC.” -Grant Tunkel

Haha, very true. Which leads me to the question: how crappy must it be to face USC for your first game as a head coach? What kind of pregame speech do you give? Well, the spread is 46 guys, so lets go out there and lost by only 40! Rah, rah. And what is a Vandal? Yeah, that’s what I want to know.

<no frames="">
Like them or not, college football will always have polls, not just because of the system, but because WE want them

Mad about where your team is ranked this time of the year? That’s understandable. Plenty of people are out there scratching their heads that in many rankings USF (That’s South Florida for those of you scoring at home) is ranked higher then the likes of Miami and Notre Dame.

I have no problem if people want to disagree with the rankings, because that’s half the reason they are there.

College football is so huge for a few key reasons:

1. Football in general is king in America
2. People love to argue and debate their school vs. yours
3. The system is flawed

Ever stop to think that college football execs looking down on us, are eating these poll controversies alive? They are basking in it. People are talking, and they are talking a lot. And nothing draws hype to something, quite like talk.

Let me put it this way. While polls are an extremely inexact science, they do serve a purpose. They give us fodder to go by at the beginning of the year. Case in point: true college football fans will watch no matter what, but how many more people will watch a game because one team has a number 2 by its name and the other a number 15.

This weekend for example, Tennessee and Cal, both top 15 teams, square off in the opener of their season. Could you honestly look me straight in the eye, and say that the allure of having such high ranked teams square off week one doesn’t generate some buzz and excitement?

And again, I want to continue to re-iterate that the polls have issues. Afterall, if USC runs the table, they will be in the national championship game. But isn’t that the case for most BCS Schools? Under the rare case of three teams going undefeated, there is always going to be someone left miserable (see Auburn), but aren’t the polls more for the fans then anything?

I’m a huge sports fan, and I watch the sport religiously, but I won’t lie and persuade you to believe I remember everything about 2006. Cause I don’t. Polls bring us up to speed. They get us back into the mode.

I’ve heard people say, well, could you imagine if the NFL decided its champion that way. No! Two totally different situations. In the NFL, you have eight cut and dry division winners, and four wild cards. The best record gets the job done. Not so in college, where strength of schedule, conference alignment, time of the year you lost, even when you played all come into account. Plus, the NFL has uh, 32 teams, whereas D1 has upwards of 120 and counting. So while I’m far from a fan of the current BCS System, comparing it to pro simply is not fair.

People love to debate, and ranking teams 1-25 (Number 26 just isn’t good enough to make the list), is something our country obsesses over. We are enamored with all sorts of rankings in general. Power Rankings on line, lists of greatest teams, players, movies, coaches, stadiums, uniforms, etc. all rile us up.

So its just important to keep that in mind. Polls are good for college football. People care just that little extra because teams have a number next to their name. In the wacky world of what have you done for me lately, that is college football’s greatest drawing power. That, and well, Notre Dame. Gag.

<no frames="">
HGH use will cost hard hitting
Rodney Harrison four games, but what will public perception be?

Ready, set, go… Who’s going to be the first one to chime in on New England’s defensive leader getting caught for using HGH?

Um, me! Because once again, it’s drugs in sports (albeit not quite steroids), but this time its happening in football. To no one’s surprise, athletes are still using these things, but the better issue becomes: How much more gentle will we be with Harrison then we would be with athletes from say a different sport?

It will be interesting to see how the public reacts to this. My opinion is not quite straightforward however, so I will break down my reaction to the news piece by piece:

Another athlete using drugs- Don’t these guys learn?
Apparently not. And you might not like me for this, but I can accept football players using HGH more so then baseball players. For all the wear and tear ballplayers go through during the rigors of a 162 game schedule, it simply doesn’t compare to the beating football players take. Baseball players can get out of bed in the mornings, football players, not always. And so to speed up the reaction time to an injury (because lets face it, football players have a much smaller window then does baseball to prove themselves and make their dough, before their considered a wash-up looking for a new career), I can almost live with this. Having said that…

It’s still wrong, but he did apologize
Halleujah. Immediately after the news Rodney came right out and apologized. “I made a mistake,” he said. (side note: Don’t you know that when you’re doing these things its wrong. And at that point it isn’t just making a mistake, merely dropping the common sense flag, and replacing it with a, catch me if you can kick me sign on the back of your shorts). Props to him however for coming right out with it. Lets face it: wrong as it may be, he didn’t waste a minute in taking the heat, and he handled himself very professionally with his apology. Having said that, I still do not condone his choice to use HGH, merely I do understand it.

Where does this leave the Patriots?
They’ll be fine. Yeah, they have a tough slate to start the year including the Chargers, but they can overcome this. Harrison will be tough to replace, but given Mr. Hoodie’s track record of piecing things together, I think New England will be just fine until his return week five.

If this was baseball…
Well, there’d be a major outrage. You can yell, scream, kick, and pout all you want, that’s the simple truth right there. Fooball can get away with it. Unfair, yes. The reality, indeed.

I never do this if I’m not blogging.

College football ‘07 has officially been live for an hour now. Sorry I didn’t get started in time to give you the insights on the first few games, but frankly, I didn’t really get too excited for Rutgers vs. Buffalo. Neither did you.

7:50 I thought Michael Vick marketting was out? Commercial comes on for grill trying to emphasize how much football fans like said grill. The guy goes, “I’m a ‘Dogs fan. My bro’s a Ravorbacks fan. Naturally, my Dogs are better, but we always have to prove it each time he comes over…”

7:55 Chris Fowler says that Miss. State is trying to build on last year’s late season push. They went 1-4 in the last five games.

8:03 Ms. Mississippi just gave her quick analysis of the ‘07 team. I’d like to watch a South Carolina game… (Ms. South Carolina Makes Stupid Answer)

8:22 Back from commercial after Miss. State QB Michael Henig throws a pick, Fowler says, “It’s amazing how much of a momentum shifter a turnover can be.” I’m sorry, but what momentum? The Bulldogs were getting ready for a 3 n out before they threw the pick.

8:26 LSU drives into the 40 for the second time, this time coming up with a field goal. Fowler calls it a “victory for Croom’s defense.” That’s like calling the Vietnam War a victory for the US.

8:33 Watching Henig drop back to pass brings to mind images of Michael Richards doing his comedy routine in Compton. Lots of running for cover.

8:36 Miss State is going for it on 4th n 2. This early in the game, they are already raising the white flag. Some would say that’s better than all their Confederate Flags…

Of course, they miss it.

8:42 End of the first quarter. Seems like a lot of action, but LSU’s only up 3-0. Maybe it just feels like a lot of action after watching baseball all summer.

8:51 3rd n long, Miss. State ball. Henig COMPLETES A SHOVEL PASS!!! Maybe they should stick with those for the rest of the game.

8:52 Craig James gets his commentary in: “If Mississippi State doesn’t score, they’re dead.”

9:02 SportsCenter update: Louiseville scores again, up 42-10. This means one of two things: Louiseville is for real! or… Murray State sucks!

9:11 If they are to compete for the national title, LSU will have to improve on their Red Zone offense. They have already come up short twice in Dogs’ territory. This time RB Jacob Hester takes it from the 10 and makes a goaline dive… to the 9 and 2/3. Then he runs a sweep out to the 10. Next play, they get pass interference in the end zone and score from the 2. 10-0.

9:18 SportsCenter update: Another Big East powerhouse to fear: Cincinnati! They go up 32-3 on SEMO. I’m scared.

9:23 Henig’s third interception thrown puts Miss. State in their best scoring situation yet: From their own 5, LSU gets sacked at the 1. (They end up punting from the 5 after two runs.)

9:35 LSU gets the ball back with 1:35 left and drives down for a TD as the half ends.

We go into halftime with the score LSU-17, Miss. State-0, Henig Interceptions-4.

Sideline reporter’s first question to Croom: “Coach, four interceptions, why do you think Henig is struggling so much?”

9:47 Halftime, so I’m taking a look at today’s comics (Bloggers are so busy we don’t have time to read the paper in the morning.). You wouldn’t believe what Garfield is up to! He’s got himself wrapped up in fishing line! HO! HO! HO!

9:54 SportsCenter Update: David Beckham goes down for the season. After playing in three of last place Los Angelos’ 18 games, Becks sure did a lot to popularize American soccer.

10:02 Two minutes into the second half, and college football is already boring. Welcome to the new season.

I feel better already about Vick’s chances for reform. “I want to call him and support him,” Artest said. “I think athletes just gotta be more aware. At times things happen so fast in your life, you just stay living that same lifestyle. You can’t do it no more. I just hope people can take the mistakes I made, mistakes other people are making and just learn from them.”

Learning from your mistakes. Kind of like when you get into a fight with fans in the stands, take a year off to think about your actions, get in trouble for abusing your dog the next year, then get in trouble for abusing your wife the year after that. He has never repeated the same mistake twice. He has learned what is wrong then tries to find out whether something else might also be wrong. And, with a record of loving dogs similar to Vicks’, there is no one better to speak for Vick.

The most honorable thing Vick has done, though, according to Artest, is lying.

“[He] lied and then came back and apologized to everybody, I felt that was classy.”

???

“I was touched that he took full responsibility. I felt that was a real man. I know for a fact he’ll come out a better person.”

Full responsibility? You just got done saying he lied? Apologizing for something you were forced to admit to in order to get a lesser sentence isn’t exactly taking responsibility.
