MITCH BLATT

When Mark McGwire got around to talking about the past, he finally admitted to using steroids.

The news was greeted with a collective yawn.

Now some days later, I’m thinking, would Barry Bonds get elicit the same reaction if he admitted to taking steroids?

I know there’s a lot of differences between the two, and I will point those out in the rest of the article. The similarity is that both of them took steroids to set home-run records, and both of them, basically already admitted to it: McGwire, in front of Congress, and Bonds, in front of a grand jury.

Bonds has received by far a lot more media coverage and fan hate.

Well, for one thing, he was already enough of a “bad guy” before taking steroids, so that’s one thing driving it.

And he does actually hold the single-season records and all-time records for home runs. It just so happens that he had the misfortune of breaking the record when steroids was a big news story, and Big Mac’s run came before that.

With that comment, there is a question of what drives the media: Obviously Bonds’ home run spree helped drive the media conversation on steroids, and McGwire’s did too, but not to the same degree.

In 1998, McGwire was found with andro in his locker, and he admitted to taking it. The media narrative turned to steroids for a short time after that, but the most people in the media seemed to push away the steroid aspect. Andro isn’t steroids, and they didn’t seem to want to entertain the idea that McGwire could be taking steroids, or that andro was in a similar sphere to steroids. People seemed to want McGwire to break the record and didn’t want their fun dampened.

Then when 2008 rolled around, certainly we knew more about how rampant steroid-use was, and Jose Canseco had published his book, so of course there’s gonna be more scrutiny.

Furthermore, Bonds’ story also involves America’s justice system, and Americans like a good law and order case. The back-and-forth between Bonds and the prosecution made for a good story, but the case has been indefinitely postponed since last February, presumably because the feds can’t get enough evidence, what with Bonds’ trainer refusing to speak.

Then there’s that last small difference between Bonds and McGwire, the one I haven’t mentioned yet, but I know most of you were thinking about it when I wrote the headline. I don’t know if race has anything to do with it, and I don’t think there’s any reliable way to tell. I’ve already noted a lot of reasons why Bonds legitimately gets more negative coverage than McGwire. I hope race isn’t another factor, and I’m certainly not going to say that it is, having already said that “I don’t know if it is,” but when you think about the two narratives, that’s obviously something to think about.

(And if anyone wants to misquote me, they can go back and read that last paragraph.)

Big City Bias Without The Boston Bullshit

Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated film, The Dark Knight, premiered this weekend and all eyes were transfixed on the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the dynamic villain, The Joker. In tribute to Ledger’s devilishly mesmerizing character, I have decided to nominate the 5 most villainous sports figures of the past ten years.

1) Barry Bonds- Bonds, 43, a 7-time MVP and 8-time Gold Glove winner who is baseball’s all-time home run king with 762 dingers, is one of the greatest players to ever grace the diamond. Unfortunately, Willie Mays’ godson is also one of the most despicable and surly human beings to ever be thrust upon the world of professional sports. In November of 2007, Bonds was indicted on 4 counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for lying about his use of performance enhancing drugs (including the allegation that he utilized a steroid called trenbolone, which is intended to improve the muscle quality in cattle). Currently, Bonds is an outcast who has been essentially banished from the sport of baseball.

2) Bill Belichick- Belichick, 56, helped lead the New England Patriots to 3 Super Bowl championships and he is widely heralded as one of the greatest coaches in the annals of the NFL. But, Belichick is also a cheater both on the field and off of it. In September of 2007, the philandering fashion plate, who has a career record of 41-57 as a “HC” without Tom Brady at the helm, admitted that he had been illegally videotaping his oppositions defensive signals since the 2000 season.

3) Roger Clemens- Clemens, 45, won 354 games in his career and was awarded the Cy Young Award a record seven-times. But, the fat Texan also cheated on his wife, Debbie, at least 354 times and he likely took a minimum of 7 different forms of illegal performance enhancing drugs throughout his sham of a career. Any time now, “the Rocket” could be launched to prison for lying to congress.

4) Alex Rodriguez- Rodriguez, 32, is a 3-time MVP and 12-time All Star who many believe will one day be revered as the greatest baseball player ever. Early last year, A-Rod was asked why he was such a magnet for criticism and he responded, “When people write bad things about me, I don’t know if it’s because I am good-looking, I’m biracial, I make the most money, I play on the most popular team.” The reasons that many dislike the purple-lipped pariah are actually because he is a pompous, robotic and fake man who is incapable of succeeding in pressurized situations.

5) Ray Lewis- Lewis, 33, a 2-time AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and the MVP of Super Bowl XXXV, is one of the most dominant linebackers to ever step on the gridiron. He is also a menacing man who was charged (and later acquitted) with murder and aggravated assault after a fight in 2000 left two dead from stab wounds. Lewis was the first MVP of the Super Bowl to not be asked to say the famous phrase, “I’m going to Disney World” after the game. One can only presume that Lewis wasn’t the image that Disney craved to be associated with their brand.

* Honorable mention: Kobe Bryant

Everybody has different vantages and varying likes and dislikes. I would be interested in hearing the opinions of others on this subject. In this case, nobody can be pronounced wrong.

•	As always, thanks for taking the time to give me some of your time. I hope I entertain you with my take on the past few days in the world of sports.

•	New York Yankees Senior Vice President Hank Steinbrenner said yesterday that baseball is unjustifiably tagged as the only sport with a steroid problem and he alleged the epidemic is far worse in the National Football League than it is on the diamond.

“I don’t like baseball being singled out,” said Steinbrenner. “Everybody that knows sports knows football is tailor-made for performance-enhancing drugs. I don’t know how they managed to skate by. It irritates me. Don’t tell me it’s not more prevalent. The number in football is at least twice as many. Look at the speed and size of those players.”

Surely Steinbrenner chapped a number of asses with his controversial allegations and I imagine that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would now love to duel with big-Hank in a “Mexican Street Fight.” Nevertheless, it’s usually refreshing when a man of significance speaks his mind instead of being neutral and politically correct. Steinbrenner called the proverbial spade a spade and the NFL knows it.

•	Roger Clemens’ Yankee jersey was unceremoniously removed from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center last week in direct response to the cloud of steroid suspicion surrounding “the Rocket.” The museum’s brass illustrated the art of addition by subtraction here and their entire establishment instantly rocketed-up (pun intended) in class by removing any link to the lying Texan.

•	Does anyone else see Clemens’ horrifically abrasive lawyer Rusty Hardin as an unsightly blend between Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and Jim Carey’s character in Dumb and Dumber?

•	The Reverend Al Sharpton remarked last week that federal investigators had better hold Clemens to the same standards that they have former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds.

“When I see a contrast between how you treat a Clemens and how you treat a Bonds, that is a civil rights issue,” said the polarizing clergyman.

Although Sharpton generally drives me to whiskey, I couldn’t agree with him more in this case. Pasted below is an excerpt from an entry that I posted on January the 9th of this year.

“If Clemens does eventually get elected into baseball’s Hall of Fame, Barry Lamar Bonds, 43, had better be enshrined as well. If Clemens does ultimately make Cooperstown and Bonds doesn’t, then sadly America as a whole is as racist as many proclaim.”

I am often offended at Sharpton’s penchant for making everything an issue of race. But, in this instance, all I can say is, “Amen, Reverend.”

•	Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte held a press conference in Tampa, Florida Monday to discuss being named in the Mitchell Report and being forced to speak with Congressional investigators earlier in the month. Despite the fact that he looked as nervous as a hooker in a cathedral, the southpaw seemed forthright and genuine and I applaud his moxie for publicly owing up to his sins. Pettite was wrong for what he did and he will face a lifetime of skepticism for the decision he made to utilize human growth hormone. Still, it is a genuine shame that so few ballplayers have had to face the music when so many of them have shot steroids into their cheeks. I suppose that is what happens when the Director of the Boston Red Sox is appointed to conduct the investigation. Conflict of interest, anyone?

•	John Rocker, a flash-in-the-pan jackass who has been out of baseball since the ripe old age of 28, again flapped his gums last week and revealed how much of an untalented Neanderthal he actually is.

“Bud Selig is a clown,” said the moronic hick from Georgia. “He should do the entire world a favor and kill himself. He is a certifiable idiot.”

This is simply a vintage case of a midget calling a munchkin short. Rocker is one of the least appealing athletes in the annals of sports and it is pathetic that such a disgrace ever made it to the professional ranks to begin with. In reality, if John Rocker kills himself, he will do “the entire world a favor.”

•	Thanks again for reviewing my material. Without your readership, I’d have no reason to write.

<no frames>

More Bonds, Yeah!

Well, Game of Shadows, the book that exposed Barry Bonds as a steroid-user, is now going to be made into an HBO movie. This is just what I need. After watching Bonds in baseball games for the past decade, then on ESPN for half of this year as he was chasing the home run record, then again on ESPN all this week as he was indicted, I was devasted when he announced that he was going to boycott the Hall of Fame inductions.

First time here? Like what you see? Subscribe to JSB

There’s just not enough information out about Bonds now. I mean, sure he’s got his own network (ESPN), but there can only be one person talking a time on a single television channel. (Sometimes they bring Stephen A. Smith on, but I can’t understand what he’s saying.) Also, ESPN shows basketball for a few hours every night, so where do I get Barry Bonds info then? I might miss an important development on his steroid use.

I have already read (and reread) all of Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada pieces on Bonds’ steroid use. Then when I heard they were going to make a book that was basically boiled down to all the articles they had reported on Bonds put together into book format, I was ecstatic. But, I got through that too quick and there were only 1,864 other books listed in Amazon’s database on Barry Bonds.

HBO executives were frustrated to learn that the Onion already own copyright for the name “No Shit” and this design.

Love Me, Hate Me: Barry Bonds brought up the sad possibility that some people might actually hate Barry Bonds. Imagine! How cruel society is today…

My only regret is that this movie isn’t being made by ESPN. They make the best sports movies: 3, Hustle, and Ruffian, for example. They also had that great series Bonds on Bonds.

Now most people don’t like ESPN’s original entertainment–see the Internet Movie Database ratings of their movies below–but I believe there is still a place in society for contrived, overhyped TV movies that repeat stories we’ve already heard without adding anything.

(Internet Movie Database ratings
Hustle-on Pete Rose, 4.1/10, featured review: “a piece of junk. If Tom Sizemore ever turns in a worse performance he should quit acting and take up ballet. This film was horribly written, terribly directed. … I wish I could provide viewers of this film with some sort of reparations.“
Ruffian-horse racing, 5.9, “smells like horse manure…“
3-Dale Earnhardt, 6.8, “Inaccurate, lame, few good parts…“)

Maybe I’m just a traditionalist that way, but I like this stuff, and I can’t wait for the Barry Bonds movie.

Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi both took steroids, but only one has been indicted by the federal government. Bonds is black and Giambi is white. Fortunately, Ms. Hill did not spend much time on that issue in her latest column defending Bonds. She did mention it as an afterthought, but certainly not as prominently her colleague Scoop Jackson has in the past. However, her defense of Bonds was also completely devoid of any form of logic.

First time here? Like what you see? Subscribe to JSB

Hill seems to have forgotten why Bonds has been indicted. Her column focuses mostly on how she and others dislike Bonds for being undignified:

I have been as critical as anyone of Bonds. I didn’t want to see him break Hank Aaron’s record, because he’s not as dignified as Aaron was and Bonds didn’t respect his natural ability the same way Aaron respected his.

But that doesn’t mean Bonds belongs in prison.

Yes, it is true that being a jerk and taking steroids are not crimes that will result in jail time, and that’s precisely why Bonds is not at risk of receiving jail time for taking steroids.

He’s on trial for lying to a federal grand jury. Giambi was in front of that same grand jury, and he is facing no punishment because he did not lie.

All Bonds needed to do was admit that he knowingly received steroids from Greg Anderson and he would have been off the hook. Instead he’s looking at a up to five years in jail if convicted of one count of purjury. (He’s charged with four, but he will probably not be found guilty on all four.)

What did Bonds have to lose by admitting to taking steroids? His legacy? Everyone thinks he took steroids, anyway.

His freedom? Using anabolic steroids to build muscle is technically a crime, but Bonds and the others testifying were granted immunity for anything they said.

Further, the transcript of the case was classified, so, even having admitted to steroid use, no one would have known about it had the two San Francisco Chronicle reporters not had it given to them illegally and published portions of it illegally.

But, now, his life, his freedom, his faint hopes of a Hall of Fame induction, all rest in ballace. (That last one doesn’t matter, because Bonds said he is going to boycott his induction.)

But Jemele Hill thinks it’s “a gross and terrible injustice.”

Kind of like taking steroids or lying to a grand jury.

Hill mentions that the feds didn’t need Bonds to get to BALCO. Indeed, BALCO’s president Victor Conte spent four months in jail without the help of Bonds’ testimony. However, Conte’s prison sentence could have been longer had there been a more solid case against him. Conte’s original suggested sentence was eight months as part of a plea deal. Unfortunately, steroid sentencing laws were weak when he committed most of his crimes.

Regardless, if Bonds were to get away with his blatant lies, that would set a standard that lying to the feds isn’t going to result in punishment.

I just hope for Hill’s sake that she doesn’t ever get called to testify in the case of ESPN vs. Media Credibility.

So, $92 million dollars isn’t enough for A-Rod? He needs to leave the team with the highest payroll in baseball to find someone who will pay him his fair market value of $32 million a year. Well, who did he come crawling back to in the end?

Of course, Pay-Rod had to have some incentives in there. For example, he may make what has been reported as $20 million extra if (I’m sorry, when) he breaks the home run record.

Yes, the chances of him breaking the home run record are so huge, that Hank Steinbrenner had the audacity to say something I would expect A-Rod to say:

“The Yankees have never had a player since Babe Ruth that really had a 100 percent chance of setting the record.”

For the record, A-Hole has 518 home runs over 14 season, 244 away. At the rate he’s going it will take 7 seasons for him to break the record with his steroid-enhanced muscles.

Now, I know, you love A-Rod. The world loves A-Rod. There’s no way he could ever taken steroids.

Jose Canseco says differently. And recently, Jose’s been very trustworthy.

People who support A-Rod for being clean and taking Bonds out of the record book are blind to A-Rod’s character flaws. He may not be Bonds, but he’s still a narcisist deserving of our contempt. I’m obliged to say he’s worse than Bonds because with Bonds at least we know he took steroids, and at least he’s getting punished for it. A-Rod is just like Hitler. When you’re in a bad situation, you will accept anyone as your savior.

Which brings us to…
Barry Bonds

I’m surprised he got indicted. They must have found some extra evidence that they hadn’t had in the past three years. Greg Anderson still wasn’t complying, but they said he was going to need to be a key player in the case.

Electronic Village has the 10-page indictment on their website for download. It’s mostly incidents that Bonds lied back in 2003 in front of a grand jury.

Here is an interesting exchanges:

Q: Starting in December 2001, on this page, there’s BB here, which obviously are consistent with your initials; correct?

A: He could know other BBs.

Q: Correct. But BB would also be your initials, is that correct?

A: That’s correct.

That’s what you go to law school for: learning how to get a suspect to reveal their initials.

Meeechigin

Damn State Up North thinks they can win the Big 10 even after losing to Appalachian State. They’re a disgrace to the Big 10. And they’re going down.

<no frames>
Marc Ecko’s Branding of Bond’s HR Ball is a Double Win!

Barry Bonds is still mad that Marc Ecko bought his record-breaking home run ball and branded it with an asterisk. So mad in fact, that he has decided to boycott the Hall of Fame inductions if the Hall of Fame upholds their decision to display the ball. Instead of shocking and disturbing the baseball community, baseball fans are rejoicing. We don’t have to see Barry Bonds glorified ever again!

Sure there will be some press this offseason as Bonds looks for his American League saviors, but once the season starts, he won’t be doing much to make press. He’ll just be batting .275 with 30 home runs or so. Nothing special. He’ll keep doing that for five more season. (Or so he says: “When I decide to retire five years from now, we’ll see where they are at that moment…”)

By forgoing his probable spot at the Hall of Fame inductions, he’ll have no chance to give a self-congratulatory speech talking about how he faced so much adversity–racist fans, racist media, rich parents–to come out on top. He won’t be able to cry about how much he loves his dad and his godfather. He’ll just be whining to the media about how racist Marc Ecko is.

Barry Bonds knows that most people don’t like him (because Americans are racist), but he chose the wrong way to protest the branding. When Hank Aaron didn’t attend Bonds’ record-setting game, he annoyed Bonds, because Bonds wanted him there to watch his record fall. On the other hand, no one wants Bonds at the Hall of Fame inductions.

But no matter what the public thinks, Bonds is standing by his principles: “You cannot give people the freedom, the right to alter history. You can’t do it.” Barry, Barry, Barry… If only you knew, that’s exactly why baseball fans hate you.

For example…

Mark Ecko, who bought Bonds’ record-breaking HR ball, is hosting an online poll to find out whether the ball will be sent to Cooperstown with an asterisk or sent to outer space. Bonds thinks that is immature and bad for baseball. He thinks the ball is historic and should be treated with respect. I think MLB’s rules and federal law should be treated with respect.

Bonds Again: Mad That The Giants Won’t Resign Him
So Bonds is on the decline, and he already set the record. Why would any team want him now? The Giants, for one, don’t. Bonds is claiming this is a travesty, bringing up all the points about how he played for them for a few seasons before this and how he did so much for the fans. How could they get rid of him? Even worse, they only gave him half a season to say goodbye to his teammates.

Oklahoma-64, Tulsa-21
Play a decent opponent, Oklahoma. Jesus. They get all the southwestern self-sacrifices. Can’t wait till they take on Texas.

Or it can be sent to the moon. It’s you call. Online bid winner, Marc Ecko, owner of Ecko Unlimited clothing, has set up an online poll to determine the ball’s fate.

You can vote here. Ecko spent $752,467 on the ball. At first glance, it’s just a rich man having fun with his money, but the publicity he gets from this might very well be worth it. While he actually he three options in his poll: 1.) send it to Cooperstown as is 2.) send it with an asterisk emblazened on it 3.) send it to outer space, it is pretty obvious that option #2 will win. I just hope Cooperstown displays it. Here are what my options would be for such a poll:

-Let Michael Vick’s dogs chew on it.
-Display it in a Las Vegas hotel and see how long it takes OJ to rob it.
-Leave it on IRS Commissioner Mark Everson’s front doorstep and have him pay the taxes on it.
