A-Rod, Barry Bonds, Michigan…
So, $92 million dollars isn’t enough for A-Rod? He needs to leave the team with the highest payroll in baseball to find someone who will pay him his fair market value of $32 million a year. Well, who did he come crawling back to in the end?

So, $92 million dollars isn’t enough for A-Rod? He needs to leave the team with the highest payroll in baseball to find someone who will pay him his fair market value of $32 million a year. Well, who did he come crawling back to in the end?

First time here? Like what you see? Subscribe to JSB

Of course, Pay-Rod had to have some incentives in there. For example, he may make what has been reported as $20 million extra if (I’m sorry, when) he breaks the home run record.

Yes, the chances of him breaking the home run record are so huge, that Hank Steinbrenner had the audacity to say something I would expect A-Rod to say:

“The Yankees have never had a player since Babe Ruth that really had a 100 percent chance of setting the record.”

For the record, A-Hole has 518 home runs over 14 season, 244 away. At the rate he’s going it will take 7 seasons for him to break the record with his steroid-enhanced muscles.

Now, I know, you love A-Rod. The world loves A-Rod. There’s no way he could ever taken steroids.

Jose Canseco says differently. And recently, Jose’s been very trustworthy.

People who support A-Rod for being clean and taking Bonds out of the record book are blind to A-Rod’s character flaws. He may not be Bonds, but he’s still a narcisist deserving of our contempt. I’m obliged to say he’s worse than Bonds because with Bonds at least we know he took steroids, and at least he’s getting punished for it. A-Rod is just like Hitler. When you’re in a bad situation, you will accept anyone as your savior.

Which brings us to…
Barry Bonds

I’m surprised he got indicted. They must have found some extra evidence that they hadn’t had in the past three years. Greg Anderson still wasn’t complying, but they said he was going to need to be a key player in the case.

Electronic Village has the 10-page indictment on their website for download. It’s mostly incidents that Bonds lied back in 2003 in front of a grand jury.

Here is an interesting exchanges:

Q: Starting in December 2001, on this page, there’s BB here, which obviously are consistent with your initials; correct?

A: He could know other BBs.

Q: Correct. But BB would also be your initials, is that correct?

A: That’s correct.

That’s what you go to law school for: learning how to get a suspect to reveal their initials.

Meeechigin

Damn State Up North thinks they can win the Big 10 even after losing to Appalachian State. They’re a disgrace to the Big 10. And they’re going down.

Or it can be sent to the moon. It’s you call. Online bid winner, Marc Ecko, owner of Ecko Unlimited clothing, has set up an online poll to determine the ball’s fate.

You can vote here. Ecko spent $752,467 on the ball. At first glance, it’s just a rich man having fun with his money, but the publicity he gets from this might very well be worth it. While he actually he three options in his poll: 1.) send it to Cooperstown as is 2.) send it with an asterisk emblazened on it 3.) send it to outer space, it is pretty obvious that option #2 will win. I just hope Cooperstown displays it. Here are what my options would be for such a poll:

-Let Michael Vick’s dogs chew on it.
-Display it in a Las Vegas hotel and see how long it takes OJ to rob it.
-Leave it on IRS Commissioner Mark Everson’s front doorstep and have him pay the taxes on it.

<no frames>
Hopefully, A Lot Longer Than It Took A-Rod to Hit 500

Talk about putting things in perspective. Barry Bonds breaks the home run record and now the unlikeliest of players, Alex Rodriguez, is being cheered on like Jesus vs. Satan, Red Sox vs. Yankees, FDR vs. Hitler. Only the A-Rod vs. Bonds matchup is really more like Stalin vs. Hitler. Stalin may have helped take down the Nazis, but he still killed 100 million of his own people.

Just because Bonds is a selfish jerk who took steroids, everyone thinks that A-Rod (A-Hole), another selfish jerk who took steroids, should break the record just because he’s not Bonds, and he’s closest. If you support A-Hole, I advise you to stop and think about what is happening. Major League Baseball right now is just like Germany in 1932. Things are looking bad, so we are panicking, looking everywhere and anywhere for a savior. So, now baseball’s Hitler is poised to take power.

Think about why you hate Bonds.
1.) He took steroids.
2.) He’s selfish.
3.) He’s a flake.

Think about A-Hole. You can come up with the same list:
1.) He took steroids. -Let me preface this by saying that at least 50% of MLB player’s have taken steroids. There have been enough players like Jose Caniseco and Ken Caminiti giving estimates as high as 80% that 50% is a realistic measurement. As for A-Rod, he’s a top slugger, and Caniseco says he’s writing a book that will likely implicate Rod. …And we all know how credible Caniseco is. (Note: No sarcasm.) He was proven right multiple times when players implicated in his first book, a book that took much skepticism in the national media, we suspended for failing steroid tests.

2.) He’s selfish. -I’m taking this as a given, but for any of you who don’t already think he’s selfish (not like I’ll convert you), he keep complaining about not getting paid enough after signing a $252 million contract and we’ve all heard about his famous feuds with teammates.

3.) He’s a flake. -I guess feuding with teammates also contributes to his flakism, but we also know that he was cheating on his wife and now we have evidence that he might be cheating on Joslyn Morse, too.

Think about what it would mean for A-Rod to hold the record. Think about what it means for you to be making such a big deal about getting the record out of Bonds’ hands. It means that the record means something. As much as people said they were going to not care and not pay attention to this fraud, they have inevitably cared. They are giving credence to Bonds’ claim as the home run king by railing against him. If the record were really so unimportant, we would simply go on with our daily life, hailing Hank Aaron as our king. Instead, it’s as if the record determines who is king and not our conscience. We are doing everything we can in these desperate times to try to reverse the overthrow and keep Aaron in power. Give up. It’s over. It’s been over ever since MLB decided to ignore the problem in the ’90’s. It’s not a big deal. Aaron can still be your king. The record is what you want to make of it.

Because it must be. Because I am unsure how to think. This whole Bonds things is just all sorts of crazy. It opens up Pandora’s box, and shuts down the question: Will he reach it? I think he just did*
<no frames="">
</no>The day has come. Bonds has hit his 756th. By now, most of you know what the media thinks, so I’m not going to feed you that over-played you know what. Instead, here’s how I look at this crazy bag of lies/pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of hell.

1. He did it!
Like Bonds or hate him, Barry Bonds has just eclipsed the most amazing record in sports. We’re not talking one great season here, we’re talking 20+ seasons in a marathon not a sprint. Say what you want about the whole performance enhancing drugs issue, but the record in itself is amazing, and to see the chase unfold before our very eyes, even more stunning in high definition.

2. He did it?
As in, how did he do it. Most of us are convinced he did use some sort of steroid, and that does indeed give this record a black eye. Bud Selig didn’t even show up to the game, and it’s obvious he is a big skeptic too. Let’s be real: if this was someone he liked, say a Albert Pujols or Alex Rodriguez, Selig is high fiving big time execs in fancy 10,000 dollar suits, while doing the cha cha. He clearly felt vulnerable (as he should have) during this whole pursuit. After all, who goes to nine straight Giants games without talking to Barry for even a second. The whole thing stinks, all the way from San Fran to Milwaukee, down to Sunny South Florida.

3. Phew, it’s over!
Bud Selig must be so relieved this whole mess is over with. Bonds had his moment in the sun (for better or worse) and now he’s through. At least for a little while, and after we stop dissecting what this means. The Barry Bonds-apalooza has reached its fitting conclusion: late at night with most people asleep, Bonds hitting it off a no name pitcher that plays for Washington of all times, all in the friendly confines of AT&T Park. You hear that Bud, sports fans alike, you can go back to sleep now. Tomorrow you get to re-live everything you missed!

4. I almost didn’t want it to end
Say what you want about Bonds (it’s all probably been said time after time anyways), the treatment he got after cranking that home run out into the stands was truly a sight to behold. Never in my life have I seen a game stopped that long for a ceremony. Truly something. Whether you like him or not, that’s merely indifferent at this point. That ceremony that the Giants planned was truly amazing, and I was left wanting more at the end. Scary, I know.

5. Aaron speaks!
Well, there you go America. Hank Aaron continued to show why he’s one of the classiest gentlemen in sports when he congratulated Bonds on the massive jumbotron after Bonds belted out 756. Aaron, you may not like Bonds, but it took moxy and the “I don’t have to stoop down to his level” effect to wisely congratulate the man who doesn’t deserve your record. For that Hank, you are an even better person then you were yesterday, and 755 will never die because of it.

6. What now ESPN2?
You just lost your programming guide for the next two weeks. Just curious, if that Bonds chase had lasted a month, would every Giants game be put on the deuce, leading to the channel’s renaming: ESPN Bonds. And on that note, thank goodness this whole thing is over, because Washington-San Fran is arguably one of the most depressing head to head match ups you can assemble right now.

7. To the victor goes the…
Clever designs. ESPN.com and SI.com both came up with catchy graphics for Bond’s 756, while CBS Sportsline (a yellow bar? a yellow bar?) falls flat. Kudos to SI for showing journalistic integrity, as they managed to slide in an asterisk in place of the “O” on Bonds’ jersey. I normally love your stuff SI.com, but that was a low blow during a huge event for your industry. Save your judgments and assumptions for a later day.

8. O no, what do we do now?
The Bonds chase is over. Uh, what, do we uh, um, uh, damn, I can’t even form a complete sentence trying to come up with something to replace all that Bonds filler stuff. I mean, excessive re-runs of the Bronx is Burning just ain’t going to cut it. Bonds on Bonds may I suggest? Ah, just kidding, my head might literally explode. (In unrelated news: Brady Quinn’s holdout is over too, meaning that the last month and a half of sports has been rendered irrelevant. History will never be the same).

9. Is he gone?
Bonds has his 756th and the Giants have gobbled up as much of the cash cow as they can. I have a feeling this is it for the two sides. The Giants are in full on rebuilding mode, and Bonds, well he just doesn’t merit $18 million or whatever he is currently making now. I think Bonds lands in Oakland, where fans attempt to warm up to him, before attacking him with giant asterisk bobble head dolls. But uh, retirement, or the New York Yankees (You heard that right), are always an option too.

10. Is this story over yet?
Yes. It just ended. You can go back to your unicycle lessons now.
<no frames="">
</no>

I can’t believe ESPN is wasting their time with him. After All, he did lose in round one of the Who’s NOW contest. Jeff Gordon beat him soundly with 62% of the vote. Apparently being 6th place in all-time racing wins is more impressive than being #1 all-time in home runs. Even Barry Bonds’ off-field headlines weren’t enough to lift him past Gordon.

The series is all about who is creating the most “buzz” from athletic dominance to newsmaking outside of sports. So even though Bonds is shown on SportsCenter every morning, even if it is just to show him striking out, and headlines in every newspaper and magazine, even non-sports magazines, scream about his impending all-time home run record and his steroid use, Bonds is NOT very NOW.

While Bonds’ loss can be easily chalked up to a bunch of evil white sports geeks who hate him for no other reason than the fact that he has tainted the game with steroid-use and increased his home run totals past those of fair-playing national icons, the fact that he was seeded 5 going into the tournament (behind Gordon at 4) cannot be explained so easily. (Yes, it can, ESPN created the tournament. That explains it.)

Knowing full well what I might be subjected to (President Bush won’t say what was barred by his latest anti-torture bill, but I’m sure watching Who’s NOW is on there.), I tuned in to SportsCenter this morning hoping to find the latest scores. What I found was a debate over who is more NOW: Shaq or Tony Parker. (Parker, seeded 7th, upset R-Fed in round 1.)

The fact that I can call Shaq by his first name just proves that he is more now than Tony. (Tony who?) Sorry, Tony Parker. Parker’s list of accolades includes winning 3 titles on team’s built on TEAMWORK. (ESPN stresses this all year, but then during this segment, they say that Parker was the key to last year’s Finals.) Shaq has won 4 titles and 3 Finals MVPs. Already, we see that he is better in the championship category. Further, Shaq has always posted better numbers and is a lock Hall-of-Famer, one of the best players at his position EVER. Parker has just recently emerged as one of the best players at his position for the season. So Shaq wins on the court easily.

Off the court, Shaq has starred in movies, produced rap albums, and brings a posse of friends and paparazi wherever he goes. Parker married someone famous. Shaq is someone famous. I think I know where this is going.

Yet Stu Scott took ESPN’s accepted train of thought and said, “Wait, Shaq lost early in the playoffs this year. Parker dominated the Finals. Parker produced a French rap album. Parker had sex with…”

ESPN is always doing Who’s NOW, whether they call it that, or not. Throughout the 05-06 NBA season, praise was lauded all over LeBron James while D-Wade was cast in the shaddows. That is until Wade’s Heat won the Finals. Then, Wade had all the glory until LeBron made the Finals. Judging by his invite to host the ESPY’s LeBron is back on top. ESPN needs to slow down and look at the big picture. One great Finals by Parker doesn’t override decades of dominance by Shaq.

Thankfully, all three “experts” (Adam Sandler is a sports expert?) agreed. Because Parker producing a French rap album is just fine with the French. But, here in America, we have balls.
