Andrew Wiggins Chose Kansas, Incurred The Twitter Wrath Of College Basketball Fans

Nothing in the world of NCAA men’s basketball recruiting mattered until today, as the presumed No. 1 recruit, Andrew Wiggins, finally made his decision about which school he’d attend for one year before declaring himself eligible for next year’s NBA Draft. A 6-8 forward, Wiggins was the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year and averaged 23 points per game for Huntington Prep, and his slam dunk mixtape had some people calling him “The Canadian Jordan”.Every bigtime program in the nation was recruiting this 18-year old phenom, including Florida State, which had its best and brightest (above) turning up the fire for his recruitment. And a lot of people predicted that he’d follow in the footsteps of other bigtime one-and-doners like Anthony Davis and Nerlens Noel by attending Kentucky. But they were all wrong, as Wiggins announced that he will play for the Kansas Jayhawks next season. In the wake of his decision, there is a ton of hate being spewed at Wiggins on Twitter right now, so I thought we’d examine one of my favorite hateful Tweets and shake our heads at some others. Here are the Tweets that one gentleman Tar Heels fan wrote leading up to Wiggins’ decision that were just recently deleted, and prior to him turning his account private:@22wiggins PLEASE COME TO UNC WE HAVE THE HOTTEST CHICKS IN THE WORLD! And basketball too.@22wiggins Carolina’s clearly the best@22wiggins contribute to the tradition of greatness and follow behind MJs footsteps. Please come to UNC! #Wiggins2UNCNothing harmful or mean-spirited, obviously, but that went down the sh*tter as soon as Wiggins chose Kansas.@hpbasketball RT @santiago_arroba: @22wiggins you’re a pigfucking piece of shit and I hope you die in a plane crash on your way to Kansas— Michael Williams (@PickandNole) May 14, 2013That one also disappeared, but nothing actually ever disappears from Twitter, so he issued an apology anyway.Geez okay sorry I didn’t mean that guys chill outThis guy certainly isn’t alone, and I just love showcasing how powerful hate can be on Twitter when we don’t think before we Tweet. In fact, here are plenty of other examples, courtesy of Run the Floor…Make sure to check out the rest of the rage at Run the Floor. It’s pretty spectacular. The post Andrew Wiggins Chose Kansas, Incurred The Twitter Wrath Of College Basketball Fans appeared first on With Leather.

AAU Coach Says He Accepted Money To Influence Ben McLemore

Ben McLemore's former AAU coach says he accepted money and benefits to influence the star Kansas guard's decisions, according to USA TODAY.
Darius Cobb, who coached McLemore, says the founder of mentoring organization Hooplife Academy gave him two payments of $5,000 and three all-expense paid trips during the 2012-13 season. With those payments, Cobb was supposed to influence McLemore's decisions.
Cobb also says that Richard Boyd, McLemore's cousin, was on two of the trips to Los Angeles when they met with potential agents to plan for McLemore's NBA future. McLemore was still a member of the Kansas Jayhawks at the time.
Cobb admits he's had a checkered past in the report and had financial troubles when he accepted Rodney Blackstock's payments, but says he's coming out with this information in an attempt to warn future parents of athlete prospects.
USA TODAY Sports also acquired documents showing Blackstock being a complimentary guest at three of McLemore's home games.
John Infante of Bylaw Blog doesn't see much being accomplished in terms of the NCAA throwing the hammer down on the Jayhawks, since McLemore's already going pro.

First, the NCAA has to investigate a number of people who are under zero obligation to talk to them. Blackstock, Cobb, even McLemore are beyond the reach of the NCAA now that McLemore is headed to the NBA. Unless Cobb decides to talk to the NCAA and provide documentation of these payments and gifts, the investigation could quickly run into a dead end.
Second, despite some differences, the McLemore allegations shares some common elements with Cam Newton's. In both cases, a individual with influence over a student-athlete is alleged to have received or requested money in exchange for using that influence, without clear evidence that the athlete knew what was going on. And under the Cam Newton rule, in both cases we might treat these individuals as agents because of the new definition.

As Infante says, the strength of the case and potential punishment lies on how much Cobb shares. Ben McLemore doesn't have to give a shit, though, since he's no longer a student-athlete.

A Note For Chipper Jones And Assorted Others, From The Editors Of Deadspin

What you're about to read is a stupid story about people being stupid with one another on the internet. Somehow, we're not involved (only we sort of are). It's stupid, and there are no lessons to be drawn except that there are days when the internet seems like nothing so much as a roomful of gibbons pounding on each other's inflamed testicles. Please try to follow along.
On Friday, Chipper Jones tweeted something innocuous about the Michigan-Kansas game. Pete Gaines, a Kansas Jayhawks fan who was briefly a comment moderator and weekend writer on Deadspin, tweeted a mean and stupid thing at Chipper Jones. Chipper Jones tweeted meaner and stupider things in response, dragging us into this, as well, and inspiring his Twitter followers to descend on Pete (and us) like a flock of idiot Bieberites.
Pete recapped the whole affair for The Classical yesterday in a story entitled "Cyberbullied By Chipper Jones":

But I guess what I’m saying, after Chipper Jones went on an hours-long invective jag against me—my literacy and my jealousy, my height, my (lack of) hair, my weight, the appearance of my fiancée (a professional sportswriter, no less) and my sexuality—is this: Chipper Jones himself has done more, personally and recently, to confirm these second- and third-hand stories about him than I would ever have thought possible.

We figured it would only be fair to turn to get Chipper's take on the matter, so we tried Chipper's longtime agent, B.B. Abbott, and asked him about it. "Cyberbullied by Pete Gaines," was our thought. Abbott sounded tickled at first, but eventually wrote back with this message:

Chipper wants to just drop it with this guy. Obviously, doing this would just cast additional light and notoriety on him. That is not something Chipper wants to do. Thanks for reaching out. Best of luck with the website.

Earlier this afternoon, "the website" noticed that Chipper does not seem to "want to drop it with this guy." Chipper, in fact, is quite willfully "casting additional light and notoriety" on Pete Gaines and (by wrongful association) Deadspin today:

Amazing! Being accused of cyber bullying? Deadspinners can dish it but can't take it. They accuse me of roids and they say I'm bullying???
— Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) April 2, 2013

What a crock! Open ur mouth and suffer the consequences little boys. Ur mad bcuz ur big mouths turned the masses against u. Deal with it!
— Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) April 2, 2013

Here's a noble idea, report the truth and stop running a gossip column. Stop being shock jocks and smear peoples name. Boo-freakin-hoo!
— Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) April 2, 2013

I will not address these losers again, ever! There r 2 many other loyal followers that deserve my time and that is what I will focus on. Cya
— Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) April 2, 2013
So that about closes the book on this one. Let's recap, OK? Pete Gaines: dick. Chipper Jones: dick. Deadspin: innocent in this instance, but dicks in all others. The world is now a dumber, darker place. The end.

With Leather’s Watch This: Please Bring Back ‘Battle Of The Network Stars’

I know you will all be watching Monday Night Raw on the heels of last week’s “Not terrible” show, especially since The Rock will be appearing tonight to say witty things that people repeat in unison. I’ll probably be watching, too, since post-NFL season Monday nights are boring as hell. However, there’s a very good chance that I’m going to be watching ESPN Classic during the commercials, as the WWL’s throwback channel will be airing an episode of Battle of the Network Stars. The original celebrity competition reality TV, Battle of the Network Stars should still be around today, especially on ABC. Just thinking about Manny from Modern Family being shot into the sky as a human cannonball and all of the things that could possibly go wrong just makes me smile. It’s so much better than J-Woww belly-flopping into a pool. Please bring back Battle of the Network Stars, ABC. Or at least let TLC have the rights so they can load their show casts up with anthrax.Monday Night Raw – 8 PM ET on USAHere is a list of names that The Rock can call CM Punk tonight:Cucumber MustacheCorn MealCarrot ManCockney MidgetCow Moo-mooCrazy MaryCaterpillar MouthAny of those would be hilarious insults, perfect for The Rock to use.NCAA Basketball: Kansas State at Kansas – 9 PM ET on ESPNA few weeks back, I bravely declared that Olivia Wilde had assumed the throne of college basketball’s Most Attractive Celebrity Fan for her support of the Kansas Jayhawks, as Kentucky Wildcats fan Ashley Judd, while having a cool boy’s name, had kind of run her course. Apparently Judd heard my message loud and clear, and she announced that she was going to leave being super hot and awesome to Wilde in order to focus on supporting her state as a hot politician.Unfortunately, Karl Rove’s political action committee, Rich Men Who Look Like Thumbs, has already created its first attack ad for Judd’s eventual winning campaign. Have we no shame, humanity?Normally, I’m a staunch defender of my right to hide behind the “Keep Your Politics Out of My Sports” tag because I hate talking about politics, but in this case I have to recommend that everyone in Kentucky vote for Judd when the time comes. Or, to be fair and balanced, her opposition should be another hot, older actress like Diane Lane. Then everyone wins! The post With Leather’s Watch This: Please Bring Back ‘Battle Of The Network Stars’ appeared first on With Leather.

Flashback Chart! Worst Defeats In Championship Seasons

We first ran Barry Jacobs’ take on UNC’s 33 point loss to Florida State shortly after the game last year. Here it is again for some perspective on the Duke loss at Miami.
Following Florida State’s win over North Carolina earlier this month, much was made of the 33-point margin. No Roy Williams team had lost so decisively in his nine years at the helm of his alma mater.
Go back farther in a head coaching career that began in 1988-89, and there’s a single instance of a Williams team falling so emphatically. His 2000 Kansas Jayhawks lost 86-53 — again a 33-point spread — at Oklahoma State on Feb. 7. Kansas’ season ended that year at Joel Coliseum in the NCAA second round against Duke.
The 2012 result at Tallahassee was so decisive and unexpected, it’s understandable the focus was on the Tar Heels, ranked third nationally at the time.
The attention also derived in part from the sputtering season’s start for FSU, expected to be the ACC’s third-best team. That prediction seems a lot more astute now – the UNC win was matched eight days by a last-second victory at Duke. Florida State beat Maryland in between.
Losing to a quality opponent is always a possibility. We got to wondering, though, about the extent of the defeat suffered by a Tar Heel unit considered an NCAA title contender. One game does not make a season, but can signal a telling flaw.
Had any of the dozen ACC squads that captured a national championship over the years overcome a setback of 33-point proportion prior to NCAA competition?
Such an investigation offers an immediate attraction for the lazy researcher: NCAA titlists generally avoid more than a handful of losses, significantly narrowing the field of possibility.
In fact the first champs from the ACC, the 1957 Tar Heels, went through the entire season without a defeat.
The most lopsided loss so far by an eventual NCAA champ came in 1993, when a UNC squad led by Eric Montross, George Lynch, Donald Williams, Brian Reese, and Derrick Phelps fell by 26 points at Wake Forest.
Duke’s 4-point loss at Wake in February 1992 was the least lopsided. Those Blue Devils, led by Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley, Grant and Thomas Hill, and Brian Davis, dropped just two games, both on the road. Fans stormed the court at Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem after topping a Duke team that elicited strong emotions.
Only Duke in ’01 and UNC in ’09 fell hardest at home. The Tar Heel loss to BC came in their ACC opener. The Devils’ Cameron crash against Maryland on Feb. 27, in which Carlos Boozer was hurt, proved the squad’s last loss of the season.
Winston-Salem is apparently a major hazard along the road to glory — of the 12 worst defeats incurred by the ACC’s future national titlists, four came at Wake.

The Most Important Movement Of 2013 Is Alive: @Boobs Accounts Are Bouncing All Over!

Yesterday, before all of the awesomeness went down and our brains collectively melted and boiled until nothing was left, we briefly discussed the rise of the popular Twitter account @KUboobs, which celebrates Kansas Jayhawks basketball with breasts. Specifically, the account accepts and Tweets mostly-SFW photos that female KU fans send of their cleavage and whatnot. I believe that the late, great comedian Patrice O’Neal had a more technical name for it all.Since the account was created last February, KU Boobs has amassed more than 22,000 followers, which doesn’t sound like much for a sports fan account, but the bulk of those fans have arrived over the past several weeks as perv-o bloggers like yours truly have caught wind of this delightful new trend. And yesterday, I, like many others, made the request – nay, DEMAND! – that other schools take up this new trend and display the boobular support for their men’s basketball teams. Now in existence are Boobs Twitter accounts for universities and colleges across the country, including but not limited to:Michigan State Oklahoma Oklahoma State Wisconsin Colorado State Indiana Baylor Texas Texas Tech UNLV Florida West Virginia Arizona North Carolina Nebraska UCFIs… is that all, Ralph?Aw, shucks. I was kinda hoping there would be one more, maybe for a certain school out in Glendale. Oh well, maybe next year.*stork lands on doorstep, drops off a little bundle*YOU GUYS! It’s an Arizona State Boobs account! It’s a miracle!Of course, now it just needs some actual ASU Boobs. The post The Most Important Movement Of 2013 Is Alive: @Boobs Accounts Are Bouncing All Over! appeared first on With Leather.

I have a confession to make – since my favorite NCAA men’s basketball team, UCF, is currently serving a one-year postseason ban for all sorts of cheating goodness, I’ve been a little less than enthusiastic about the 2012-13 season. However, I did start catching up the other day for the sake of giving some more coverage around these parts, and what I’ve learned is:Kentucky sucks.UNC sucks.Duke is starting to suck.Louisville is awesome.I’m sure there’s some more important information that I need to catch up on, but the people on the Tweeters, as well as my crack research team and fact checkers have told me that the above information is completely correct. That said, I have apparently been missing the hottest gimmick Twitter account on this entire planet in @KUboobs, which is nothing but pictures of female Kansas Jayhawks fans showing off their rock and chalk, so to speak. And this has been around for almost a year. Shame on you, research team.Look, I’m usually the first to decry a worn out or retread meme or Internet fad. But all of you female coeds out there, from the University of Miami to Washington State, listen to me very clearly – DO THIS FOR YOUR SPORTS TEAM. Seriously, start a new Twitter account now – like @ArizonaStateBoobs, for example, and by example I mean someone specifically do that one now – and get your school’s female fans to show their mostly-SFW pride for their college basketball team. Let’s ride this one out for all it’s worth until someone inevitably starts @PrincetonBulge and it’s all ruined. The post God Bless The Internet: KU Boobs Makes The Kansas Jayhawks No. 1 In Our Book appeared first on With Leather.
