2011 Tax Returns show high salaries for Haden and Kiffin

In a world of coaches making big time money I am not really surprised that Lane Kiffin is reported making 2.6 million based on a report in USAToday.

Southern California athletic director Pat Haden received more than $2.2 million in compensation in the 2011 calendar year, according to the university's latest federal tax return. The total makes Haden the nation's highest paid AD.
[...]
This is the first time that Haden's compensation has appeared on USC's tax return. Haden replaced Mike Garrett as AD in August 2010. Non-profit organizations must provide calendar-year reporting of their most highly compensated employees. So 2011 was Haden's first full calendar year on the job.

USC as a private school is free to pay what they want...that is not really surprising. We have heard all sorts of rumors of what Kiffin is making since he came on. Coaches tend to make the big bucks, though many will say Kiffin isn't worth half that amount.
Now, while it is surprising to some on the face of things, Haden's compensation does raise some eyebrows. It would not surprise me though if part of Haden's compensation was to fill in the gap when he stepped down from the USC board of trustees. Again, USC being private with all the money that has been coming in allows them to compensate their administrators as they see fit.
The only thing I guess we could complain about is that for that amount of money the athletic department still lags in the performance of the Women's Hoops program and USC's storied baseball program. Haden's Stanford-ization of the athletic department is noble but has frustrated many.
Haden's compensation will also frustrate many with Haden's comments about the NCAA and his early comments marginalizing the fanbase over USC's lack of action against the NCAA.
Those are some big numbers but it is not like USC can't afford it...I really am indifferent. The bigger question is USC getting its moneys worth?
The Jury is still out on that question.

USC Women's Water Polo - 2013 NCAA Champs!

This was a real barn burner going 5OT.
Here is the write up from the DN.

USC's Anni Espar delivered the winning goal for the Trojans after 45 minutes, 47 seconds of water polo to beat Stanford 10-9 in the third sudden-death period, winning the NCAA championship Sunday for the top-seeded Women of Troy in Boston.
The match was not only the first NCAA women's water polo final to go to overtime, it went through the two 3-minute overtime periods and two 3-minute sudden-death periods before Espar's shot gave USC a stunning and exhausting victory and its fourth national championship.
"This game was really tough," Espar told NCAA.com.
"I missed a lot of shots too. (USC coach Jovan Vavic) said it was my time and I trust him, so...

NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship Thread: USC vs. Stanford

This weekend, the #1 USC Women's Water Polo team traveled to Harvard to compete for the NCAA championship, and after steamrolling their way to the final, they will compete their program's fourth national title against a team they expected to meet here from the start of the season: the Stanford Cardinal.
All season long, it's been USC and Stanford vying for the top spot, with everyone else a distant third. Both teams' losses have come at the hands of each other. USC (26-1) lost a home game on April 13 by a score of 6-4. It is the only game this season in which USC scored less than nine goals. Stanford (29-2), lost to USC in two tournament finals, first in the UCI Invitational 13-10, and then in the MPSF conference championship 11-7.
By winning the MPSF title, USC earned favorable matchups in the quarters and semis of the NCAA tournament and make the most of them. In the quarterfinals against Pomona-Pitzer, they gave up the first goal of the match before steamrolling their way to a 27-1 victory. Then, on Saturday, they defeated Hawaii 16-9, going on a seven goal streak early in the match to put it out of reach.
Stanford, meanwhile, cruised to a victory over Iona 20-3 before facing a tough semifinal against dark horse UCLA. Like many of their toughest games, Stanford relied on their tenacious defense and strong goalkeeping from senior Kate Baldoni to get the job done, advancing to the final by a 5-3 win.
The final holds huge implications for both sides. For Stanford, a victory would give them their third consecutive national championship, a full-fledged water polo dynasty, and the school's 104th NCAA championship. USC is gunning for their second national title in four years, and Jovan Vavic is aiming for his 12th national title as a USC head coach. That would tie him with legendary track coach Dean Cromwell for the most national championships won by a coach in Trojan Athletics' history. This is also the third time in the last four years that Troy and The Farm have faced each other in the championship. USC defeated Stanford 10-9 to claim the 2010 crown, and Stanford downed SC 6-4 last year.
So, who will be victorious: USC's juggernaut offense, or Stanford's lights-out defense? The game starts at 2:15 PM PT and will be streamed on NCAA.com. Comment here. This is the game thread.

Concern Trolling USC's QB History

You can tell its the off season...
You have to shake your head at some of these knuckle heads in the press.
The lack of production of USC's quarterbacks in the Super Bowl have the concern trolls out in full force.

Pete Carroll was asked a simple question: What happened to Matt Leinart in the NFL? Why did his career crash and burn?
"Stupid question," Carroll said with a smile.
Carroll was at the Indianapolis scouting combine, in a corner of the RCA Dome, and launched into an impassioned defense of Leinart and, then, another USC quarterback, Matt Barkley, who would later fall in the draft at terminal velocity into the fourth round.

I find it amazing that people don't use common sense (or basic research) and at least try make an article balanced....but then it wouldn't be controversial if they did.
My friend Brdcstr blows the doors off this one...

"This statistic is one of the more damning for the Trojans. At least 15 times that group of USC quarterbacks won either a national championship (outright or share), a Heisman or made a Rose Bowl appearance. None won a Super Bowl and only a handful made the playoffs."
((((((((((((((((((((YAWN)))))))))))))))))))))
Currently, there are...
120 FBS teams 125 FCS teams 149 Division 2 teams 236 Division 3 teams
Of those 530 colleges that play football (if you want to claim that UCLA plays football), only 26 different schools have produced winning Super Bowl QB's.
I'm no math major, but even I can tell you that percentage is only marginally lower than the IQ of the guy who wrote this article.
it's no secret that USC hasn't produced a high amount of quality NFL QB's...but the list of schools that DO is shorter than the amount of inebriated pot smokers suiting up for Oregon on the average Saturday in the fall.

As I said in that thread....WELL PLAYED SIR!
Much ado about nothing.
This article just goes to show you that USC still moves the needle...love us or hate us.
I wait with baited breath for this clowns next article.

Matt Barkley News

With the NFL draft in the rear view mirror stories are starting to to come out about the reactions to the draft.
Obviously Barkley's slide was the big news...
Here are some links.

Who Crowned Matt Barkley? There has been some buzz since the Eagles chose Matt Barkley in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, as you might expect. For one it defied many of the preconceived notions people held about what works in Chip Kelly’s offense. Also, had Barkley departed USC one year earlier, he might have been a far more heralded prospect, perhaps even a top 10 pick.

As you can see, some are positive, some not.
Hopefully Matt Barkley has a fire in his gut to prove everyone wrong!

Joey Kaufman says good-bye

If you haven't read this then you should read it NOW! One of our own is moving on to bigger and better things.

In full disclosure, I had an interest in sports journalism from a young age, mostly because I discovered I was about a foot shy of ever having any chance to play center for the Los Angeles Lakers. Though I had little idea of what exactly journalism entailed, I wanted to work in sports.
Watching Mom read the paper, though, firmly cemented the goal of sports writing in my brain, and it gave me a greater purpose. I too would deliver the news to readers. I would tell them about their favorite teams. Maybe they were also missing the games because of something traumatic. They couldn’t always be around to smell the grass, to listen to the crowds, to feel the excitement. They wouldn’t always be in the stands.
So I promised to be there for them, in order to tell those stories.
Luckily enough for me, the Daily Trojan provided me with a chance to do just that. Covering USC sports for the last four years, and last two and a half years with this column, allowed me to live up to that set standard.

I remember my email exchange with Joey when I asked him to come on to Conquest Chronicles to help me and DC Trojan out.
Seems like yesterday.
I knew it would be short lived as Joey was moving onto the Daily Trojan. I had no problem with Joey using CC to hone his chops. It worked out great for both of us.
I have enjoyed having Joey here, he is far better writer than I will ever be. I have also missed his contributions of late, but of course I understand he had bigger responsibilities with the DT.
Joey isn't going away, he is heading to Columbus, Ohio to do an internship there. And you can still find him on Twitter
We wish him well and thank him for his contributions...he will always have a home here.
Thanks Joey!

Women's Water Polo Earns Top Seed For NCAA Tournament

After winning at a preseason tournament and losing during the regular season, the USC women's water polo team claimed a decisive victory in their third meeting with the Stanford Cardinal and in doing so claimed the MPSF championship and the top seed in the NCAA tournament.
After defeating Cal State Bakersfield and Arizona State to reach the final, USC found themselves facing the only team to have bested them this season. USC lost to Stanford at home two weeks ago by a score of 6-4. It was their worst offensive performance of the season, but this past Sunday, the Women of Troy would not allow the Farm to stop them again.
In the first quarter, it was all USC, as they scored five unanswered goals to take a stranglehold of the lead. Stanford would not get on the board until they scored a penalty shot early in the second period. In the third period, USC's lead grew to seven goals before Stanford attempted to rally back with three goals of their own. Strong defense from the field and solid goalkeeping from Flora Bolonyai helped seal an 11-7 victory.
Australian junior Hannah Buckling led scoring with four goals, including one in the first quarter barrage. Bolonyai made nine saves. Team scoring leader Monica Vavic scored three in the final and nine in the tournament, increasing her career total to 110 goals.
USC will now compete at the NCAA championships at Harvard on May 10, where they will face Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinals. Having the top seed is a big advantage for SC, as a victory over the Sagehens will give them a semifinal against either Hawaii or UCSD. Stanford, on the other hand, will likely have to go through UCLA in order to get to the final.

Men's Tennis Loses Pac-12 Title To UCLA

#5 USC made an attempt to win its second consecutive Pac-12 men's tennis team title, but was stopped in the final by the top-ranked UCLA Bruins, who earned four straight singles points to take their program's first conference tournament championship. USC now enters the NCAA tournament with a 23-4 record, with three of those losses handed to them by their crosstown rivals.
The final went much like the last Trojans-Bruins match 10 days before, with USC winning the doubles point via two 8-6 decisions. Sophomore Yannick Hanfmann then earned a second point for the Trojans by taking down UCLA's highest ranked player, Marcus Giron, 6-4, 6-1. But after that, it was all Bruins the rest of the way, taking four singles wins in straight sets to take the victory. Ray Sarmiento, USC's highest ranked player, was leading in his match 6-4, 3-6, 4-2 when UCLA earn the deciding point. Had he held onto the lead, the score would have been 4-3 UCLA, the same as the two previous meetings between these teams.
USC tennis has done a good job staying strong after the graduation of Steve Johnson, who was a central component to the creation of USC's four straight national titles. But UCLA has grown into a top contender this year, winning 14 in a row after USC gave them their only defeat of 2013 in the ITA indoor tournament. The Bruins will likely hold the top seed of the NCAA tournament, while the Trojans will receive a top 10 seed and home court advantage for the first two rounds. First round matchups and locations will be revealed on Tuesday night.
