Barry Zito Has Found Christianity And Guns

In the off-season, Tim Lincecum found a newer, more mature look for himself, and now the Giants other bro-starter has followed suit. Barry Zito, once of "stabbin' cabin" fame, is transforming himself from the poster boy of Bay Area chill to a full red-blooded American. First up: religion.
From Zito's GQ Q&A this week:

I've found something that I just really love, which is the Christian faith, and it's new to me. I grew up being a seeker and being completely out of the box and testing and reading and trying all different religious things and kind of philosophical approaches and such, and it's kind of a backwards route. Most people are raised very rigidly in an organized religion and then they try to fight their way out of that. I needed structure [laughs]. A lot of these kind of spiritual things are all based on the self and that was just too—I couldn't handle that anymore. I don't know. I think it led to a form of—it can lead to narcissism, I think.

He's been reading a lot of C.S. Lewis, and a turn to religion for the 34-year-old makes some sense, considering he's how much shit he's gotten for his busted contract.
But that's not all. Step two for his metamorphosis: A new passion for shooting things. "I think when you have a family and you understand that you have so much to lose if some lunatic is gonna come off the street and try to do something in your home, it makes you feel a little better to know that I'll be able to defend my family," he said.
GQ writer Nathaniel Penn sympathized. He told Zito that he had an intruder in his apartment recently, and he's kept a baseball bat by his bed ever since. Zito responded:

A baseball bat's probably not gonna get it done, dude. I hate to tell you, because if homeboy's got a gun.... Yeah, man, it's not a safe world out there, dude.

Calling people "dude" is always the last thing to go.

Notes:
The Giants came back, and John Kruk knew it all along: The now-champion San Francisco Giants made the World Series after coming back from down 3-1 against the Cardinals. Since the Tigers swept the ALCS, San Francisco received nearly 30 percent of SportsCenter’s total airtime last week. Much of that airtime was given to the Baseball Tonight crew. Presented below are analyst John Kruk’s thoughts on the eventual outcome of the series, These are actual quotes:
Oct. 18: (Giants Down 3-1)Karl Ravech: ”Is it over?”John Kruk: “It doesn’t look good and Lance Lynn won 18 games but didn’t pitch good either as a starter in his start and Barry Zito, you don’t know what you’re going to get but you can’t count out the heart of champions. The Cardinals are champions so to me it is over.”Oct. 19: (Giants Down 3-2)Ravech: “Do you believe the Giants can come back now?”Kruk: “Absolutely they can. Because they got their best pitcher going in the playoffs right now in Vogelsong in Game 6. And Matt Cain in Game Seven. You know what he can do. And inn that ballpark, yeah, they got a chance.”(Wednesday’s SportsCenter ended before the completion of Game 6.)Oct. 22: (Giants win 4-3)Kruk: “The pressure of the situation got to some of the Cardinals’ players and they did not make plays. Kyle Lohse couldn’t grab the ball in Game 7. David Freese couldn’t get Angel Pagan out at home. Those aren’t unearned runs but could have been if they made the plays.”In a span of five days, Kruk went from saying the Cardinals were going to win since they’d been there before, to suggesting that David Freese succumbed to the pressure of the postseason. The same David Freese who had one of the greatest postseasons in baseball history, who singlehandedly saved the Cardinals from elimination in the World Series just a year ago. He couldn’t handle the pressure.Rick Reilly continues to be on your TV: The Monday Night Football crew was in Chicago for Bears-Lions last week, so Rick Reilly had the chance to do another smear-job on Jay Cutler and disguise it as a comedy piece. The whole report, which lasted nearly seven minutes (including the roundtable discussion afterwards), was focused on why Cutler always sulks and pouts on the football field. Reilly stated that everyone in Chicago loves Jay, and the least he could do is show some appreciation for the fans who really love him by smiling and looking like he’s having fun.

“There’s 50 shades of Jay, and they’re all morose.”

The pun is the highest form of humor.

For Better Or Worse, Barry Zito Is Always There For The Giants

On October 19, Barry Zito took the mound in St. Louis, with his San Francisco Giants trailing the Cardinals three games to one in the NLCS. He was not the pitcher the Giants would have wanted, one game from elimination. Nine days earlier, in his first start of the postseason, Zito had been yanked after surrendering his fourth walk in 2 2/3 innings. This time, though, with the Giants more or less out of options, Zito pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings, striking out six, walking one, and allowing only six hits. More »

Meme Watch: Everybody Loves Pablo Sandoval

Riding high after their come-from-behind NCLS victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Francisco Giants were not supposed to be able to defeat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series. In fact, there were many sports writers and fans alike that believed that the Giants and their hot, scrappy bats wouldn’t even be able to score a run off of Verlander, who is arguably the greatest pitcher in the universe right now.Of course, all of those people were wrong and Pablo Sandoval made history last night, as he joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only players to ever hit three home runs in the World Series. Joe Morgan probably believes that he has, too, but we know better. As for his feat, the man they call Panda is humbled.“Man, I still can’t believe it,” Sandoval said.“We played our last game only two days ago,” Sandoval said. “We’re still hot. We just came here and played our game.” (Via CBS)And Sandoval was the only Giant who needed to play his game, as his 4 RBI performance was all the Giants needed to defeat the Tigers in this 8-3 game. Well, I guess San Fran would have also needed pitcher Barry Zito, but nobody likes to give MLB’s top Sublime cover band singer the credit he deserves for being great this season. So all of the joy and praise shall be bestowed upon Sandoval, because f*ck pitchers, that’s why.And the Internet’s biggest Giants fans were quick to praise their Game 1 hero, as memes started popping up like wildfire. As always, I’ve collected some of my favorites and they are quite splendid.(Via)(Via)(Via)(Via)(Via)(Via)(Via)And how about a little love for Zito?(Via)(Via)The post Meme Watch: Everybody Loves Pablo Sandoval appeared first on With Leather.

Pablo Sandoval And The Giants Rocked Detroit For A Shocking Game 1 Win

There were many predictions being tossed around in the minutes before Game 1's first pitch, but what most folks generally agreed upon was that Tigers ace Justin Verlander would have little-to-no problem with this Giants lineup. At the same token, there was no chance (right?) that Barry Zito, who pitched a $100 million game in saving San Francisco's skin in Game 5 of the NLCS, could not possibly repeat the same delicate command and mixing of speeds that he displayed in that virtuoso performance. As it turns out, Verlander was out after four innings, having given up five runs on 98 pitches, while Zito baffled Detroit's lineup all evening, needing only 81 pitches to breeze through five and two-thirds. Three home runs from Pablo Sandoval supplied more than enough offense and the Giants pulled out a dominating, almost easy 8-3 win over the Tigers to take a 1-0 lead in this 2012 World Series.
