UFC 160: Trading punches with Mark Hunt 'too dangerous' for Junior dos Santos

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos boasts among the best striking skills in mixed martial arts (MMA) today.
But, when he returns to action this weekend (May 25, 2013) at UFC 160, he will face perhaps his stiffest test in the stand up department when he goes toe-to-toe against decorated former K-1 kickboxer Mark Hunt.
And while "Cigano" holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under submission specialist Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the hard-hitting Brazilian has yet to show off his grappling skills inside the Octagon, preferring to use his striking to get the job done.
That can all change at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday night, according to "UFC Tonight" analyst Kenny Florian, who suggests that dos Santos' coaches should advise him to take the fight to the ground and avoid trading punches with "Super Samoan."
"Ken-Flo" feels that's a "dangerous" game to play for the former 265-pound champ.
His words:

"Mark Hunt can knock anybody out. His leaping left hook is as deadly of a technique as we've seen in the UFC. We may very well see Junior dos Santos revert to an offensive ground game. If I'm Junior dos Santos' coach, I'd say take Mark Hunt down, and don't trade with him, that's going to be too dangerous."

Hunt was in danger of missing his scheduled fight against dos Santos after an old arrest stranded him in New Zealand. After finally receiving his work visa earlier this week, Hunt made his way to "Sin City" and will now attempt to earn his fifth straight victory inside the Octagon.
But, will the time difference and jet lag -- one of Hunt's major concerns -- prevent the Kiwi from reaching his goal? Or will his heavy-hands get the job done for him against an equally lethal puncher in "Cigano" regardless of recent distractions?
Unless, of course, the scenarios mentioned above are neutralized with a ground-based gameplan.

UFC 160: 'New blood' T.J. Grant out for 'violent’ performance against Gray Maynard

In case mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are unaware, T.J. Grant has been fighting for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) since 2009, making a successful Octagon debut against Ryo Chonan at UFC 97 as a Welterweight back in 2009.
Now 10 fights into his UFC career, Grant has finally earned pay-per-view (PPV) main card exposure, facing Gray Maynard this weekend (May 25, 2013) at UFC 160 in Las Vegas, Nevada, after being buried on the under card throughout his tenure with the promotion.
And the Canadian will look to make the most of the PPV spotlight, establishing himself as the "new blood" of the Lightweight division after years of Frankie Edgar championship rematch mania. Indeed, Grant intends to deliver a "violent" performance against "The Bully" and elevate his name among the mainstream masses in the process.
He breaks it down (via Bleacher Report):

"There's so many guys out there, I think the UFC's trying to get away from having the belt tied up for all these rematches. I'm all for it. Obviously I want my shot. I feel like new blood, I bring an exciting style, I think that a lot of fans don't know a lot about me, but hopefully just getting to fight on the pay-per-view is going to bring my name to the masses a little more. I want to have a good performance and be exciting and violent."

Should Grant defeat Maynard -- who came up short in his two UFC title shots against Edgar at UFC 125 and UFC 136 -- he will earn his first-ever world title shot. Meanwhile, a loss to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 contestant could send him back to the "Prelims" faster than a return trip to PPV.
And that's something Grant is determined to not let happen, even though the odds are stacked against him.

Warped Wednesday: Hall voters unanimously elect Jimmie Johnson pending future retirement

Welcome to Warped Wednesday. On this, we'll put out the rush to judgment mat, go a little too far and have a little fun. Will it be funny? Sometimes. Will it be crazy and largely unbelievable? Probably. Will not everyone get it? Definitely.
Just days after his dominating win in the final segment of the Sprint All-Star Race, the NASCAR Hall of Fame voting panel made a statement about Johnson's NASCAR prowess during Wednesday's Hall of Fame voting.
The panel, led by a prominent NASCAR figure who shall remain nameless because of the secret nature of the vote, petitioned NASCAR officials to hold a vote on Johnson's election today. The panel argued that there is no better time to acknowledge Johnson's dominance than while he was currently driving.
Also, the election of Johnson now saves the panel time down the road after Johnson's retirement. While Johnson has no plans of retiring anytime soon, any future Hall vote would be a formality, so this was simply a move to go through the motions and get the voting process over with.
Unlike Richard Petty and Dale Inman, Chad Knaus' Hall induction is also tied to Johnson's. (Inman was elected after Petty.) That was the day's lengthiest discussion, but it was ultimately decided that it'd be most appropriate that Knaus be inducted with Johnson.
But those two decisions aren't the most controversial. That distinction belongs to the contentious decision to allow Johnson and Knaus to skip the post-retirement waiting period. After three hours of debate, involving lots of screaming, cursing and enough flying spittle from those shouts to fill up a five gallon bucket, the panel voted 28-27 to induct Knaus and Johnson into the Hall of Fame immediately following their last race. Yes, there will be a separate Hall of Fame Lane set up next to victory lane for the induction ceremonies.
The panel also voted to not let the Fox graphic before the All-Star Race final segment anywhere near the Hall of Fame. A grassroots movement to create the NASCAR Hall of Shame formed, where the graphic and broken parts would live, but it didn't gain enough traction to be seriously considered.

Latest UFC 160 odds and betting guide for 'Velasquez vs Bigfoot 2' in Las Vegas

Paradoxically, it seems someone will go "night-night" in the western version of the "City That Never Sleeps" this weekend (Sat., May 25, 2013)
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will attempt to make his first successful title defense when he takes on Brazilian behemoth Antonio Silva in the main event of UFC 160, which takes place this Saturday evening from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If that isn't enough mixed martial arts (MMA) to sate your bloodlust, two of the division's premiere strikers, Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt, will do battle in the co-featured fight of the night.
Indeed, from top-down, UFC 160's pay-per-view (PPV) card has all the ingredients for violent excitement and thrilling savagery. And, several potential money-making opportunities hiding just under the surface ... if you know where to find them in the local sportsbook.
Follow me below for a closer look at the latest odds behind -- and best bets for -- UFC 160: "Velasquez vs. Bigfoot 2:"
Before we get into the thick of UFC 160 things, I'd like to first issue a heart-felt apology. Recently, I've been mired in a losing streak. I take full responsibility. Keep in mind my suggestions are made to the best of my abilities, but I do not pretend to be infallible. It's a crazy sport. If you disagree with my reasoning, please provide your own. Hopefully, we can help one another improve.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get to it.
UFC 160 Odds For The Under Card:
Rick Story (-150) vs. Mike Pyle (+130)Dennis Bermudez (-265) vs. Max Holloway (+225)Colton Smith (-230) vs. Robert Whittaker (+190)Khabib Nurmagomedov (-265) vs. Abel Trujillo (+225)Stephen Thompson (-170) vs. Nah-Shon Burrell (+130)Jeremy Stephens (-260) vs. Estevan Payan (+180)Brian Bowles (-290) vs. George Roop (+210)
Thoughts: Frankly, I don’t have any confidence in these underdogs -- you’re probably better off parlaying favorites. Specifically, Story and Bermudez.
Story is a limited fighter because his stand up is plodding and wild and his takedown defense is far too porous. That said, he’s well-equipped to take out Pyle. "Quicksand" has not shown off an effective long-range striking game, relying on his newfound proficiency in the clinch to land big knees.
To do so, however, he winds up getting pressured and backed into the fence. In fact, this exact same vulnerability is what allowed Story to defeat Thiago Alves, who has some of the best knees in the sport. Story is crazily aggressive and adept at attacking when his opponent is near the cage, plus stupidly durable enough to withstand what Pyle throws at him.
Therefore, lay down some dough on Story, who should take a clear-cut decision.
Bermudez’s poor striking defense is likely going to keep him out of the division’s elite, but Holloway is tailor-made for him. The latter is a highly-skilled striker, but has not demonstrated the ability to consistently stay on his feet. When Garcia got it in his head to shoot, he had success dragging Holloway down, and Bermudez is an exponentially more talented wrestler with just as much aggression. Use Bermudez to beef up your parlays.
Of the others, Bowles might not be a bad idea; he’s decimated far superior fighters than Roop and unless his layoff included an amputation or two, really shouldn’t struggle at all.
UFC 160 Odds For The Main Card:
Cain Velasquez (-800) vs. Antonio Silva (+550)Junior Dos Santos (-420) vs. Mark Hunt (+335)Glover Teixeira (-300) vs. James Te Huna (+250)Gray Maynard (-210) vs. T.J. Grant (+175)Donald Cerrone (-300) vs. K.J. Noons (+250)
Thoughts: Again, I’ve got the favorites in a clean sweep. Grant has the best shot of the bunch, in my opinion, but his clinchwork puts him directly in Maynard’s wheelhouse. And his wrestling struggles against Evan Dunham don’t instill me with confidence.
The top three underdogs have punchers’ chances, but Velasquez’s previous annihilation of "Bigfoot," dos Santos’ resilience during the "Brown Pride" beating, and Teixeira’s grappling advantage make those unwise.
That just leaves Donald Cerrone vs. K.J. Noons, and even at -300, "Cowboy" is a worthwhile bet. While his striking deficiencies (namely an inability to strike effectively off his back foot) have become clear, he is still the more well-rounded of the two on the feet and packs vicious power in his kicks. Furthermore, while he doesn’t use it very often, Cerrone has the sort of wrestling necessary to repeatedly take down Jamie Varner, making it a case of not whether, but where, he will defeat Noons.
Use "Cowboy" to ensure a tidier profit with your other bets.
UFC 160 Best Bets:

Single bet: Rick Story -- Bet $80 to make $53.33
Parlay: Dennis Bermudez and Donald Cerrone -- Bet $70 to make $58.33
Parlay: Dennis Bermudez and Brian Bowles -- Bet $60 to make $50.84

Heavyweight title fight, two possible division No. 1 contender eliminator matches (Heavyweight and Lightweight) and plenty of opportunities for memorable MMA finishes on Memorial Day weekend.
See you Saturday, Maniacs.

Eddie Wineland ‘crushed' by Renan Barao's withdrawal from UFC 161; hopes fight is rescheduled

It was just a matter of days ago when Eddie Wineland was on the verge of the biggest fight of his life at UFC 161.
Now, his future is filled with uncertainty.
When news surfaced last Saturday night (May 18, 2013) that interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao was forced off the UFC 161 fight card due a foot injury, many were left wondering what would happen to Wineland.
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old will not be able to compete at the event in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and the title fight he had with Barao is no longer a guarantee due to all the moving parts at 135 pounds and the impending return of Dominick Cruz
With the exact severity of Barao's injury unknown at this time, there are a lot of variables for all parties involved, which leaves Wineland crushed and unsatisfied.
"He said it's crushing to him," Ariel Helwani reported on Tuesday's (May 21, 2013) edition of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV. "He said it's like dangling a piece of cake in front of a fat kid for months, and then not letting him eat it. He wants to wait for Barao if it doesn't take too long for him to recover from the injury."
Normally this situation would be easy, as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials would simply reschedule the contest when both fighters are healthy.
But with the Cruz x-factor in the mix, that's far from the situation and as Helwani reports, the return of "The Dominator" could make Wineland the odd man out of the bantamweight title picture.
"I talked to current champ Dominick Cruz and his recovery is going well," said Helwani. "He's hoping to come back before the end of the year. Then he'd get fight Barao, instead of Wineland."
With UFC 161 left without a headliner, the promotion upgraded the co-main event between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans to the top of the card and also booked Roy Nelson on short notice for some added depth.
UFC 161: "Evans vs. Henderson" goes down June 15, 2013 from the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
